Do You Root/Jailbreak Your Device

Did on my old iPod touch 1st Gen. Haven't since getting my iPhone 3GS, before it was to install 3rd party apps, now the only reason I see is theming. And even then the default always seems to work best for me.

I voted no, only because I'm quite happy with my stock HTC Desire at the moment. When I get a new phone I may play around with it and see what it can do when it's rooted.

Yup. Partially because I don't like being told what I can and can't do with a device I own, but mostly it's just extending its capabilities to do things that aren't normally available,or just because I can. Not for everyone of course, some don't need it (or even care, happy with out-of-the-box), others because they may wind up bricking the device.

My observation thus far (not just from this topic) is that Android users are more likely to Root than iPhone users to Jailbreak. I wonder how this plays out?

Yeah, me too. Jailbroke again a few weeks ago but haven't used a single jailbreaking-only-app yet... :whistle: no need for it. iOS has everything I want/need.

My old phone was a SE Xperia X1. So while Windows Mobile was rubbish, it did / does let you do pretty much whatever you want.

Because of that - I jailbrook my iPhone 4 as soon as I got it. Got a few tweaks on there (pull to refresh on safari is a notable one IMO), along with a few "standard" JB apps like backgrounder etc.

Rooted my Droid Eris.

Verizon or HTC cant be bothered to keep the OS up to date, and I HATED the sense UI...

So rooting lets me run Gingerbread (2.3.3 CM7) on my device which is awesome.

Droid X / Rooted - I basically rooted so I could "freeze" apps I don't use to keep them from loading into memory and save a little on the battery life. Haven't tried any custom ROMs yet, but that might be in my future if VZW doesn't get 2.3 released in the next couple of months.

I actually don't think it's half as bad as people make it. :D Sure, Androids/WebOSs is wayyy better but gees, it's really no deal breaker... for me at least.

It's funny I see people who are like you who love iPhone say that. And people who love Android say the same thing about battery life.

Yeah well that's the thing with choice: It depends on your needs and neither on marketshare or blind fanboyism. At least that's what it should be like. I simply don't need what Android has to offer that the iPhone doesn't. So I'm fine with my choice. But of course I'm also fine with anyone who needs what Android offers over iOS. However, bad battery life would be a dealbreaker for me. ;) It p*ssed me off on my 3G aswell. And would p*ss me off with any phone. Android, iOS, WebOS... whatever you can think of. ;)

rooted my Android phone, so i could go from the default 2.1 to an unofficial 2.2 rom , and so my phone is more responsive

some of the custom roms have speed tweaks built in as well

Jailbreak and you realise your missing out.. so many little tweaks the jailbreak scene has done that apple hasn't.

People who say they don't see any reason, I just don't get it.. for a bit of your spare time you have a device that can perform so much more than it could originally?

I do understand there is a risk involved but come on live a little!! haha.
