[Win7] Thumbnail cache keeps rebuilding ALL the time

Recommended Posts

As the title says, my thumb cache for every single folder keeps rebuilding every single time i enter that folder. i could for example just press back button and right away come back and all the thumbnails are refreshed again.

I do not recall changing any options in win explorer or anything like that, but i might have deleted my entire thumbnail cache once with ccleaner (not sure about that though).

How can i stop this madness and give my processor some time off (it's killing him, this constant work)?

Also, i did recently try one VS, but after a couple of days i switched back to all the default system files (explorer.exe, explorerframe).

Only other possibilities that come to mind, is run Error checking -- hopefully it will restore whatever System files.

Or reinstall Windows 7, which I doubt you want to do.

Stop/Prevent Windows 7 From Deleting Thumbnail Cache

http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/stopprevent-windows-7-from-deleting-thumbnail-cache/

This procedure will deny the users (including System) from deleting any files inside this folder, thus, the cache will remain preserved and also speed up the loading of the folders that contain videos, music, photos, and documents.

Please note that once you prevent the delete operation of the files inside this folder, thumbnails will not be deleted if you run Disk Cleanup or any 3rd party cleanup tool.

Good luck ;)

Now that you spelled it out, i remember following these very same instructions (addictive tips is a part of my session "tips&tricks"). I deleted special permissions described, created them again, restarted but it's still not working :) I am again shocked ms would make a mistake this big and not correct it after all these years.

I suspect it might be QTTabBar as i've recently updated from alpha5 to the first beta release, it does mess with explorer and it was the culprit for the other problem i had. I need to weight pros and cons, but i suspect the convenience it offers is to much to give up.

Have a look at this registry key - perhaps some "optimizing" tool has changed this setting:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

"NoThumbnailCache" REG_DWORD

Value = 1 means: "No Thumbnail Cache"

Value = 0 or not available means: "Use Thumbnail Cache"

There is also a registry key especially for network folders - but I think that is not your problem:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

"DisableThumbsDBOnNetworkFolders"
