Portal 2 Needs FW 3.60, Locks Out CFW

Recommended Posts

We hadn?t noticed because our PS3s are ? by default ? updated to the latest version of the official PlayStation 3 firmware, but apparently Portal 2 (hands on here) requires firmware version 3.60 to run.

It?s not just an online thing, the game literally doesn?t boot without the PS3 being fully up to date, which has obviously locked out anyone using customised firmware, or still on an earlier system software.

We reported that 3.60 makes the PS3 much more secure when it landed, using a mixture of magic elves and technical gubbins, and it appears that, for now at least, it?s working.

Our review of Portal 2 goes live at 9am on Tuesday.

If you are looking to enjoy the sequel to the acclaimed Valve?s puzzle-action hybrid, the Portal 2, then you need to learn to setup your own portal, because playing it on a 3.55 CFW console right now is not possible.

You are looking at different sets of method being tested such as the famous PARAM.SFO editing, EBOOT decrypting, it?s just useless without the 3.60 keys..

I bet Sony only allowed Valve to tie in Steam on PS3 if they forced users to be on 3.60 firmware (not saying it's a bad thing, simply saying Valve probably didn't do this on their own accord).

All new games are going to go to 3.60...

Why wouldn't devs want the only currently piracy free firmware to be what their games require? It causes no harm to non-CFW PS3 owners at all.

From what I was lead to believe (and this can all be chalked up to rumors) The reason for the delay in the game was due to all the hacking that was going on with the PS3 and that they had spent so much time advertising that the PS3 version was going to be the best Console Version of the game.

I'm very curious how you think they're going to reverse engineer the game without breaking it, so that it'll run on a lower OS version.

I don't think he meant that they will reverse engineer a read-only game but that the 3.60 FW will likely be hacked in the future like all the previous versions have.

Never know. And of course they won't stop trying to get around it

I guess this is a non-event for legitimate users?

Yep, pretty much. If you're a legitimate user and you play online, you've already got FW 3.60, as it's been out for over a month, and you can't play online without the latest firmware.

I can't wait for my copy of Portal 2 to arrive, hopefully tomorrow. :)

I'm very curious how you think they're going to reverse engineer the game without breaking it, so that it'll run on a lower OS version.

They (hackers) did it on psp. For a long time games would come out requiring higher firmwares, then by modifying a couple files in the eboot they could get the game to run run fine on lower firmwares.

Valve has maintained that the hacking of the PS3 wouldn?t affect Portal 2. Even if 3.60 is hacked, Steam integration (VAC) would help to curb some of the bad affects.

    • Here is how to watch Apple's WWDC 2026 conference where iOS 27 is expected by Taras Buria It is Monday, June 8, 2026, which means today is the day Apple kicks off its annual Worldwide Developer Conference, WWDC 2026. As usual, today's keynote will be full of consumer and developer-focused announcements, including new versions of Apple's operating systems, developer tools, and more. Apple streams its developer conferences, allowing everyone to tune in and watch the announcements live. Today is no exception, so here is how you can watch it. Apple WWDC 2026 will be available to watch on Apple's official website here. Also, you can stream it on YouTube and the Apple TV app on your Apple device. The stream kicks off at 10 AM PDT / 1 PM EDT / 6 PM GMT+1. Apple's annual developer conference usually focuses on new software experiences, so do not expect major hardware announcements. What is expected is the "27" series of Apple's operating systems, including iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and macOS. Apple is unlikely to introduce major UI changes, but you can expect subtle tweaks to the Liquid Glass design language, particularly on Mac. One of the biggest changes Apple plans to announce today is a reworked, AI-powered Siri. The assistant will be available as a standalone app with a chatbot-like experience and Google's AI models under the hood. If you want to learn more about what is expected today at WWDC 2026, check out our dedicated article here. However, if you prefer a spoiler-free stream, tune in at 10 AM PDT / 1 PM EDT on Apple's official website, its YouTube channel, or the Apple TV app.
    • For we consumer readers, it would be helpful if you clearly stated in the headline if the article is about consumer or enterprise. Then readers will know if the article applies to them or not. 2 cents.
    • At the moment I have my main PC and a test PC on my work desk. The test PC is also not inverted so I am not looking at the glass panel side, which is irritating.
    • I'm glad you posted this clarification of the cause of so-called Windows 11 update problems that too often appear in the article headlines.. In the future, it would be better to readers if you took your time, did the analysis before posting an article about Windows problems, which end up being a waste of time. Just saying.
    • Nah. They'll milk the current generation in terms of design - controllers, consoles, but no meaningful hardware improvements. This is one reason why people aren't buying Xbox hardware - it's stagnant.
