Which LCD monitor?

Recommended Posts

It has been awhile since I have bought parts for my pc, probably about 4-5 months, hah so long. And I am fixing to want to get a

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB AGP Video Card

and an 19" LCD monitor.... (at least)

The only problem is, I've heard that LCD's are not good for gaming, just heard, never exactly been on one.

What I want to know is what nice 19" LCD monitor I should buy? that would be PERFECT for gaming, if one exists right now, especially an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB video card.

Now, I use to have my specs in sig, replaced it cause I was lazy to make a new one... sooo here are my specs:

Processor: AMD Barton XP 2500

Board: ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Mobo

Video: MSI Geforce4 Ti4400 128MB

Monitor: 17" Sony HMD-A200

OS: Windows XP Pro SP1

Hi,

Well, i have a 19" LCD monitor, the Samsung 192T. The display is very sharp, but i would not recommend it for gaming. Every 19" LCD screen will do some ghosting on FPS games which can be sometimes annoying, on others games like strategy games it is OK. Even with refresh rates of 16ms, 19" LCD screen will do ghosting. Anyway i do play alot of FPS games (RTCW, UT2003 and SoF2) and you get use to the ghosting. Imo you should go for 17" LCD monitors with a refresh rate of 16ms, those are actually quite good in FPS games. Go read some reviews at tomshardware, that will help in your decision :)

So far I read: http://www.tomshardware.com/display/200309...0902/index.html , according to all those monitors tested, horrible :p which is not what I want.

And was reading some others too.

Not sure at what all to get :( Maybe I shouldn't get a flat screen.... but... wanted one, or at least wanted a 19" or bigger screen hehe

And as for the Radeon 9800 Pro? Nice choice? and who to get it from? such as Gigabyte, or an SAPPHIRE...etc

128 or 256? I read another thread here that the 128 is better then 256 in a few ways or something :x heh I don't overclock my stuff... but do have mad cooling everywhere I can I guess. And has anyone know if I gotta update my bios for Radeon 9800 to work? i havn't updated my ASUS A7n8X deluxe bios in a long time, didn't want to have to either... heh havn't bothered to check as well

Well you see, before my 19" LCD i had a 22" CRT from Iiyama, sure it was nice.. but it was a beast !! I took a lot of space on my desktop so i decided to switch to my actually 19" LCD, I'm very happy with it, the display is so sharp but like i said you have to put up with the ghosting, but overall i won't switch back to a CRT.

As for the gfx card, i think you are making a good choice, i ordered myself a PowerColor 9800 Pro friday. I made my choice on price, it was actually one of the cheaper 9800 Pro cards here in France (about 398 euros), yeah more pricey than in the US. Performance wise, all 9800 Pro perform about the same, some get 3% to 5% higher scores depending on the cooling/memory combo the card came with. I'm not paying 600 euros for an FX card!! Anyway, read the reviews around the web, but a 9800 Pro is good and smart choice :)

Adios! ;)

yea, the larger LCD 19" and up i think aren't fast enough for gaming yet. i'm not sure why shark1 says 16ms still ghosts... i play on my Samsung 152T which only has 25 ms response time and i don't see any really. but just common sense, a huge display will be harder to refresh until the technology improves a bit. 17" is a bit weird because of the resolution, its not commonly supported in games. thats why i bought two 15" displays :)

I am not familar with ghosting? I'm not sure about all this ms response stuff :p

I'm guessing that from all responses, there really isn't any 19" LCD monitor that would be very nice for me and my hardcore gaming that I do? all multiplayer FIRST person shooter games I play, MOH:AA, Raven Shield, RTCW: ET, etc...

id say try one if at all possible.

ghosting maybe not be a problem, you might not even notice it.

i dont have any ghosting or any such problems with my 17'' LCD.

if your currently using a crt monitor then you will notice a big difference in fonts and general appearance when you change to a tft lcd. i did... hell i didnt like it first... but after a few days and setting up cleartype i love it, i cringe when i look at crt's now.

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 171s, and have never seen any ghosting or problems in games. After my experience with this LCD, I've been recommending that people switch from CRT, it's just such a fantastic monitor overall. I'd love to get my hands on the Samsung 213T LCD..21.3 inches of monitor pleasure. That thing is a monster. Only 16lbs, 0.270mm pixel pitch, analog/dvi, wall mountable, pivot technology, native 1600x1200 resolution..mmmmmm. If you had the cash to lay out, I'd say get that right now. :D If not, a 15 or 17 inch Samsung specifically. Their LCD's are top-notch.

After thinking about it all. I may just wait till christmas for an LCD monitor. Maybe something better than, I don't wanna rush getting an LCD monitor... really I don't. I love my monitor now, only 17" though, so that is why I was looking at things.

But

Reading more into it, I didn't think I needed the ATI Radeon 9800 256MB version, and I was right. It is best for AA, which I don't use at all, nor do I care, depends. But, I read that the 128MB version is just as almost good as 256MB, no big difference, this coming from tomshardware. so.

Now to my new question

Whos Radeon 9800 128MB version should I buy? I don't need DVI-I, TVOUT wouldn't hurt, I used it sometimes with my current Geforce4 Ti4400 128, so.

At newegg, who I'd probably buy it from, I see:

ATI SAPPHIRE RADEON 9800 PRO ULTIMATE 128MB DVI/TV 8X AGP RETAIL $389

damn dunno =p

Should I get the

Guillemot Hercules ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB DDR DVI/TV-out 8X AGP- RETAIL , $395

or the

nvidia 5900 ultra?

I've had a few people say ATI then others saying nvidia... not sure who to go with, I've really wanted the ATI, lol.

ATI SAPPHIRE RADEON 9800 PRO ULTIMATE 128MB DVI/TV 8X AGP RETAIL $389

That one is very nice. I would have got that one if it wasn't to expensive here in France

Getting my PowerColor on wednesday :D :D

Oh by the way, the 5900 Ultra are very expensive, and unless you play FPS games at 1600x1200 (where the 5900 Ultra performs better) which i doubt, cuz at 1600x1200 you can't even see the heads to aim at :)

Anyway i went for ATI
