may i ask WHY you disabled system restore? is it to save 9.6GB on your 80GB drive? like you don't already have enough space... turn it on now.

anyway, look in the event log and post any errors or warnings you get after you try to shutdown. also, try closing all programs manually before you shutdown.

like ONE service is going to noticeably slow you down... i've used it a few times and it works great IMO. whenever anyone has a problem with windows, they always say "oh, btw, i disabled system restore, so that can't help". DON'T DISABLE IT, you never know if it will help or not.

yea i got the patch as soon as Neowin posted it on the front page. Maybe one of the first to get the patch. And well to a program hanging i dont think (this is opinion) because well i can repeat the process (Start, Turn off.......ect) 1000 times and it still wont shut down. so the computer is responsive. it just doesnt wanna follow orders.

I have had someone come to me with this same problem a month ago. What I found was a hanging Porn dialer that was on there system and not allowing the system to be shutdown. I suggest running Adaware and check your IE folder under program files to see if you too have a dialer listed there. I am sorry I cant be more detailed. I cannot remember the file name.

I was able to fix it by running adaware and removing the file from the IE folder. I am not saying you have any porn dialer, your problem is a hanging app that is not allowing itself to be taken down. You also might want to look at the Task Manager to locate any suspitious files running.

why does it say version 5.2? what version of user32.dll do you have? it's in \windows\system32

close all programs, then check what processes you have that are running. try a shutdown. if it doesn't work, then post the list of running processes. if it does work, try to figure out which program you closed is causing the problem.

i found the file that doesnt let me shutdown (i guess thats what i get for downloading warez) the file is called nerkey.exe. i remember when i downloaded it NIS said that it was watching for incoming connections from all ports. i blocked it and then deleted the file from my system and the recyling bin. but now it seems stuck in my mem! how do i get rid of it?

it cant be 'stuck' in the memory if it has been deleted. open msconfig go to startup and find nerkey.exe, it should show you where the file is located. disable it from starting up by unchecking it, reset your pc then delete the file. then go and clean up your registry run values.

    • BetterMediaInfo 1.0.0 by Razvan Serea BetterMediaInfo is a modern, open-source graphical user interface for MediaInfo, designed to improve metadata inspection workflows for audio and video files. It extracts and presents technical parameters such as codec profiles, bitrates, resolution, frame rate, stream ordering, and container-level attributes in a structured, readable layout. The interface is built with clarity and responsiveness in mind, supporting drag-and-drop functionality. It preserves the full feature set of the MediaInfo library while making the data easier to parse for users working in media management, encoding validation, or post-production environments. In short, BetterMediaInfo takes the power of MediaInfo and makes it much easier to use. Whether you're checking video quality, verifying audio settings, or just curious about a file's details, it gives you clear, organized info without the clutter. Requires Microsoft Edge WebView2, which is included in most Windows versions. BetterMediaInfo 1.0.0 changelog: Added an Image stream table to the card view and detail view, including type, color space, resolution, and size fields. Added View settings to toggle Image stream tables in card view and detail view. Added BatchMkvMerge to the welcome page with localized descriptions and a GitHub link. Added a portable 7z archive to the Windows release artifacts. Improved first-run language selection by detecting the system language and saving it to configuration. Updated Italian translations. • We wrote about it here https://www.neowin.net/news/browser-vendors-pen-open-letter-to-microsoft-saying-enough-is-enough/ the open letter itself is here https://browserchoicealliance.org/open-letter/
    • Someone forgot to mention EDR in the title ? I think I will not click anymore on the articles written by this author. All are click bait.
    • Browser vendors including Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and Vivaldi have jointly written an open letter to Microsoft saying enough is enough regarding Edge being pushed on Windows users without consent. Microsoft makes it difficult to change the default browser, promotes Edge throughout Windows 11, and has made the uninstall process unnecessarily complicated compared to other apps. Does anyone have more details on what exactly the open letter demands and whether any regulatory action is being considered? Also curious whether this could lead to antitrust investigations similar to what happened with Internet Explorer back in the day. Would love to hear from anyone following this closely.
