I just updated chrome, and this is what I see as the version:

Google Chrome 11.0.696.60 (Official Build 83294) unknown <-----

WebKit 534.24 (branches/chromium/696@84661)

V8 3.1.8.12

User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/534.24 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/11.0.696.60 Safari/534.24

Command Line "C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --restore-last-session --flag-switches-begin --flag-switches-end

Why is it unknown?

It seems to be a known problem. I've noticed it being mentioned somewhere before but I can't remember how it was fixed. There is a post about it on Google's help forum, but it doesn't give any more help. It seems to effect the Dev builds of the browser, rather than the public channel. Surprisingly, Google has already crawled this forum thread - it's one of the first results when 'Chrome unknown version' is searched. It's definitely a known problem, appearing to specifically effect 11.0.696.x builds at the moment. After a few moments research, I've also seen people complaining it has occurred with 11.0.696.57, but you're on .60 so I'm not entirely sure if it's the entire cluster of builds (likely the wrong term).

I hope someone will have a more definitive answer because I'd love to know what causes this as well, rather than simply be taking shots in the dark. I suppose I could suggest the basic uninstall and reinstall procedure but it's likely more hassle than it's worth.

There are known knowns; there are things we know we know.

We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.

But there are also unknown unknowns ? the ones we don't know we don't know.

Google will fix it in the next update.

"The version info still shows "11.0.696.60 unknown". What does this mean "unknown"? "

"just a cosmetic issue. we wil fix it. thank you so much!!"

try upgrading to Chrome 11.0.696.65, which has reached the Chrome Beta and Stable Channels.

I'm also getting a similar problem to what the OP is seeing; I've installed Chrome 12.0.742.30 on my XP machine, clicked on the About Google Chrome menu command and it says "12.0.742.30 unknown"

weird.

fixed in Chrome 12.0.742.60. I no longer see the word "unknown" next to the version number on that one.

it should also be fixed in Chrome 11.0.696.68 in the stable channel.
