Should I jailbreak my iPod Touch 3G?

Ok. So, I have my iPod Touch 3G for like 20 months now! I am getting bored of it and considering jailbreaking it to experience the outside world ;)

My basic interests behind jailbreaking would be new (worthwhile) themes, functionality improvements (if any), and some geeky/experimental stuff!!

So, my question is whether I would really be able to get all this, and how much risk is actually involved in jailbreaking it?

Whether I would REALLY be able to get some professional themes (and by that I mean business) and not just some badly designed themes.

Most importantly, if things go too awry and I find it difficult to swim anymore, will I be able to get back to where I belong - the shores of iTunes and App Store? ;)

I am a geek, and I can say that I would find it really fun - And I CAN problem solve - even if I break my device and end up restoring it from iTunes - NOT THAT I INTEND TO DO IT - Just that if it happens I will be able to face it - that I know!

if you need to restore it you can just do a restore in iTunes to whatever firmware you were on before

as for themes you'll just have to sort through the hundreds of themes there are on cydia or browse forums to find what you want

or else you can just go get your own icons and wallpaper and make your own theme

It depends on what you are after. There are some nice winterboard themes on cydia.

Jailbreaking is fairly straightforward and worth doing imo.

And yes you can revert back should you need too, but you probably wont. :)

I am not an Iphone user but i will tell what my friend have told me about jail breaking iPhone.

Jb Iphone is simple and would take only few steps. you can have some nice themes and when you want to revert back you can do so with no traces.

that means no warranty is lost.

It is sooo easy to do and gives you some really useful extra features. There is no downsides to doing it.

Actually Apple can/will know if you jailbreak it. The process that's taken when you install Cydia leaves traces (SHSH blobs) and somebody at the Apple Store can check.

But it's really a matter if they care and want to spend the time checking. But if it's not under warranty, then who cares. :)

:rolleyes: sorry but that is wrong. Your SHSH blobs are signature files, that apple uses to verify that you are restoring/updating to the latest version. The process of backing up your SHSH blobs gives you the option to install whatever version of iOS that you want. Here is an example of when this is useful

I bought my iPhone4 on release so it had iOS4.0, which was jailbroken. Sometime later apple released 4.0.1 and 4.0.2. So whilst apple was still signing 4.0 and 4.0.1 I backed up my SHSH blobs.

4.0.2 broke the jailbreak. I then had to do a restore for a problem. If I hadn't backed up my SHSH blobs I would be forced to install 4.0.2 which I couldn't jailbreak. Instead I pointed iTunes my local machine where the SHSH blobs for 4.0 and 4.0.1 were saved and installed 4.0.1 so was able to jailbreak. :cool:

You are slightly right though, apple can still tell that a device has been jailbroken in the past if they look hard enough, but that is only if you have done a restore from backup. If you set the phone up as new then there is zero trace left. I have never heard of anyone having a warranty claim rejected because they were previously jailbroken, just do a restore and your fine.

Your poll option "I reverted - I missed default App Store too much!" leads me to believe you are under the wrong impression of what happens when you jailbreak. You don't lose the default App Store at all, you can still do everything you could prior to jailbreaking and more. Just to make it clear, you can still download items from Apple's App Store while jailbroken.

There is a downside in that some of the JB apps that add "OS level" functionality can also bring bugs and slow down the performance of your device.

If you are careful with what you install this really isn't a problem.

As for JB apps, not sure whats available make it worth messing with it. But that is just a matter of opinion and I certainly didn't come to argue with anyone that JB is a good thing or a bad thing as a universal rule. It comes down to what you want to do with your i-device.

If you go into any apple store, pretty much all the iOS devices have cydia already loaded. I guess thats the price you pay when you let the users play with the display items :)

Keep in mind that everything your iPod touch can do now, will still be able to do when it's jailbroken.

I used to go crazy with themes and stuff, but now I usually only go for apps and tweaks that are only available in Cydia (the jailbroken appstore). Some apps I like at SBSettings, which lets you swipe the status bar (or you can choose from a number of different activators), and brings up a little dialog with toggles for quick access. Another one I like is LockInfo, which aggregates all of your notifications, emails, calendar events, etc in a quick little window. This can be put on the lockscreen, or you can assign an activator to bring it up, as well.

Also, it's VERY easy to revert back and undo the jailbreak. Just hit 'Restore' in iTunes, and your iPod touch will be back to completely stock.

1) :yes: cydia is like having a second unofficial appstore

2) any apps downloaded through the appstore are yours to use regardless if your jailbroken or not, sync them to your iTunes on your PC/mac to back them up.

you can do a restore to remove the jailbreak and get the appstore apps youve downloaded back as long as they have been synced with iTunes. Do a backup before you restore and you will have the device back the way it was just without the extra jailbreak features.

not at the moment, there was a point when you could jailbreak by simply going to www.jailbreakme.com and sliding the bar. So this could be done by any device connected to the internet. Some people found it funny to go to the apple stores and do it to their devices, but really that only meant the staff there had to do more work by restoring them every night. Once 4.0.2 came out and stopped that you have to connect the device to a PC/mac and run some software (greenpoison, redsnow etc) in order to jailbreak.

Make sure your are using the correct JB method depending on hardware and existing ios version.
