help with RAM (SIMMS)

Recommended Posts

alright, from what i understand, SIMMS have to run as a pair. i'm sure there are some special cases where you can run just one but... whatever. anyway, this computer i'm working on takes SIMMS. it had 64MB from 4 EDO sticks. i checked the specs on the mobo and it said it could support up to 64 per slot. after seeing that, i ordered two sticks of 64MB EDO SIMMS. now, when they're in the mobo, do they have to be right next to eachother? If only one pair is in there, does it have to be in the first bank?

i think the 2nd slot in the first bank has either gone bad or i did something to it 'cause whenever i put anything in there, it gives a beep code. even when i put the 4 original sticks in there, i get a beep code unless i take a stick out of the 2nd slot. now, i tried different combinations of 3 sticks of both the 64MB EDO and the original 16MB sticks. i get different sizes. once, it read over 200MB, other times, it only read 32.

so.... at this moment, i'm running ONE 64MB EDO stick in the first slot and that's it. it's reading as 32 MB so that leads me to believe the mobo only supports 32 per slot. i just don't know how it's running off just one SIMM. the upgrade so far as been unsuccessful and the owner knows they need a new computer so this is just temporary. so if you guys have any imput at all about what the problem may be or what i may have done wrong, i'd appreciate it.
