Great thread! I'm a big music lover, I've actually been playing classical piano for 16 years and studying music for almost as much. Here would be some of my picks by period and style:

In contemporary electronic music:
Roygbiv by Boards of Canada

In contemporary "serious" music:
De Profundis by Arvo Pärt:

In XXth century pop:
A Day In The Life by John Lennon

In XXth century classical:
Concerto in G for Piano, 2nd Movement by Maurice Ravel

Nothing quite gets me like smooth, atmospheric drum and bass sounds.

There's a reason why ICR is my favourite artist.

Skip to the middle of this. Just bliss.

That said, here's a brilliant piano piece.

Top of my beautiful music tree

Soundtrack to a film that looks and is acted well as these tracks sound, The Mission

second link is a combo of tracks from the sound track

also some tracks from NIN's Ghosts series

The whole album is worth exploring as there is a wide range of different sounds, one thing i would also add is that there is art work acompany each track to help your visualise the music, it's well worth getting this also,

first vol is free for download,

Didn't know NIN did that kind of stuff. Really neat.

One of the most emotional ambient pieces I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Claims the spot as my favourite song ever.
