It's been 2 days since I installed Windows 8 RTM. I have noticed that the tiles "Weather", "News", "Finance", and "Sports" stop updating randomly. But this happens especially in the morning. I switched on my computer at 6:00 a.m. and it's 10:45 a.m. now. But the tile doesn't show the weather, it has just weather written. I opened the app and it shows the weather and the update time is current time, but the tile will not show weather. I restarted, but to no effect. "Finance" and "Sports" app were showing the news from yesterday, but when I opened and closed these apps, their tiles also stopped showing anything. This happened yesterday too, but the tiles started working at nearly 2:00 p.m. So, what kind of problem is this?

Yes. Happened to me too. I feel the whole OS was kinda rushed where they had no time to iron out minor niggles.

I think I solved the problem, I just noticed it now. Whenever I came on desktop the first time after booting, I was greeted with a dial up connection dialog. Since, it was on the desktop, I thought it was some desktop app that wanted to connect, so I just closed it. I saw it just now and hit connect, and then the tiles started updating. I will see whether this solves the problem. BTW, why does metro app ask for connection even after being connected, and that too on desktop?

I am having the problem again. Yesterday, in the dial up dialog box I checked the option to automatically connect which it did and updated the tiles. But the tiles have stopped updating yet again, and now I am not getting any prompts either. And the weird things is that people, mail, messaging tiles work perfectly. The problem is with weather, news, finance, and sports tiles. I am going crazy!

it seems that the tiles work async, so the sync process could take some time longer than other times.or they timeout. so wait for them to reconnect and get the info

Go to Internet option and delete your non existent connections that you don't actually use. They do nothing but mess up anyway. Unfortunately certain mobile broadband sticke insist on adding the.

Well, there's only one connection. And the behaviour is too random! As I said, yesterday morning they didn't automatically connect nor asked for connection. Whereas, today when I opened my computer, it dialled the connection automatically and updated! And I didn't change a thing. So, I just don't know why does it suddenly stops or starts.

Well I need that as I use ADSL to connect my internet and dial up the connection.

what kinda ADSL today requires a dial up connection...That stuff should have been done with on ADSL years and years ago.

As long as you have a dial up type connection, you're going to be having these kind of issues as they simply don't work very well.

Well, I use the router in what i think is bridge mode i.e. I dial the connection using PC. I learnt that there is a PPPoE mode where the router directly connects to internet, but is there any benefit to that mode? I am a "noob" when it comes to networking. :D I have a severe limit to my broadband (1.5 GB/month, crazy right?) so I don't want my net to be always connected unless I dial in.

I'm having the same setup of internet connection and having the same issue like you.
But now it doesn't ask me to connect at beginning.
Any idea what to do?

Well, best way is to avoid dialling if you don't have a stupid cap like my connection. And that behaviour is seemingly random. Once it didn't ask for connection and the next day it did. What I noticed was that whenever you start your computer first time on any day, it tries to connect. I haven't found anything else. As I said above in the thread, one day it didn't ask me for connection and then asked at nearly ~2:00 p.m. So, I suggest you just continue your work and it will ask after some time.
