Windows 8 Updates: Preparing for the GA

Recommended Posts

Neowin News has earlier reported that Build Win8 Blog had announced the release of updates preparing for the Oct. 26 GA:

Updating Windows 8 for General Availability

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/10/09/updating-windows-8-for-general-availability.aspx

Actually, the updates(or part of the full updates) are available, it is a massive 160M accumulative update(102M for some users):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2756872

The interesting thing is; after installation, on checking with slmgr -dlv and IE10, the windows version displayed is still 9200.16384; however, when checking with msinfo32, the Hardware Abstraction Layer shows 9200.16420; and the same goes for WMP

So it seems, when all updates are completed, the win8 version will likely become 9200.16420.

Another interesting thing: many people knows that MS will be holding a announcement event in NY on Oct.25; however, it seems it will be announced in China yet earlier, because MS China has sent out invitations for a press conf. to be held in 1933 Old Millfun(a famous Shanghai landmark) on Oct. 23(Oct. 22 USA date):

Translation: Windows 8, showing up imminent

Oct. 23, 2012

1933 Old Millfun (611 Liyang Road, Shanghai)

Laptop won't install them with the error, windows update is already installing an update, which it was not.

Desktop is currently 'Configuring Windows updates' ...fingers crossed

Has anyone who has updated Mail app noticed that their contacts are no longer associated with their main Live account ? It has happened on my laptop and desktop, the only way to add a contact to the recipient is to open the People app and go from there, otherwise it tells me none of my contacts have an email address associated with them

This actually makes my computer perform a lot better, though I'm one of the few edge cases where Windows 8 wouldn't play nice with my hardware (a Sony Vaio desktop). W00t.

It does however seem to have broken the settings for Notifications in PC Settings, though I personally don't care for them.

Yeah I think this is the update that broke my lockscreen background image anyone else experience this?

It's good to see that they're planning on updating it right up till the 26th, and even post GA. I hope they keep at it and not have us wait for service pack 1 etc.

That kinda minor build change doesn't say much, in fact it just shows how minor the updates are really (basically for performance etc). Seeing the size of this update though, it's at service pack levels in terms of MB it seems.

When installing the cumulative update (KB2756872) I get 'Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes.'

Others are having this issue too: http://answers.micro...?tab=AllReplies

Is anyone here having this issue?

It happens on my computer too. I tried several times and every time it reverts back the update, but can't find any logs about the error because, strangely, the list

of previously installed updates has been flushed and shows as empty. Also, the Windows Update shows the most recent check for updates and updates were installed as never.

I've also tried several times. I've been unable to find a solution, so I'm waiting for Microsoft to address the issue.

For me the failed updates show in the update history, and show error code 800F0922.

    • draw.io Desktop 30.2.6 by Razvan Serea draw.io desktop is a downloadable security-first diagramming application that runs on Windows, MacOS and Linux. Creating diagrams in the desktop app doesn’t need an internet connection. This is useful when you are disconnected or when you must create diagrams in a highly secure environment, where data protection is of the utmost importance. When you use the draw.io desktop app, your diagrams will be stored on your local device. Because this is a stand-alone application, also designed to run offline, there are no interfaces to cloud storage platforms available. Of course, you can still store your diagrams in folders that are synchronised to your cloud storage if you wish. Easy-to-use diagram editor The draw.io apps work just like the office and drawing tools you are used to using. Drag and drop shapes from the shape libraries and drag to draw connectors between them. Drag connectors to add waypoints and set a precise shape and position, or let them reroute automatically. Double click and start typing to add a label to anything. Create tables and swimlane flows with a familiar tool. Style shapes and connectors with customisable palettes, sketch options, fonts and text formatting tools. Search for shapes, including in open-source icon libraries. Use our vast libraries of shapes and templates, organised into logical categories, to create a range of diagrams and infographics. Generate diagrams from text descriptions using our smart templates. Diagram faster with keyboard shortcuts. draw.io Desktop 30.2.6 changelog: Uses electron 42.5.0 #2452 Updates to draw.io core 30.2.6.
