Microsoft Security Essentials had a nice option (like most other Anti Virus products on the market) to right click a file and scan for viruses. However, now that it is built in to Windows Defender, this option has disappeared. I tried searching Google and found an option to scan a folder, but is there any way to get the option back to scan individual files for viruses? (Can't believe that Microsoft left this out!)

Can't help with your main question, but virustotal has a nice right click > send to > virustotal uploader, it scans with about 40 different antivirus scanners

i use this method, not quite the same as in Security Essentials but it works

That method only works for folders, not individual files.
