Wii U Won't Have System-Wide Achievements

It appears Nintendo's new console won't have a mandatory achievement-style system like Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. Jeremiah Slaczka, co-founder of 5th Cell, said it's up to the developers to add achievements to their Wii U games. 5th Cell developed Scribblenauts Unlimited for the console's launch on Sunday, November 18.

"There are no Wii U accomplishments that are system wide," Slaczka said on NeoGAF. "They are up to the developers to include or not include. Scribblenauts Unlimited loosely has them in the form of 'Global Starite Shards' which is like a giant checklist of global things to spawn and do in the game that aren't area specific."

Slaczka did note, however, this could change in the future. "The Miiverse is in its infancy. Just think how much the PS3/360 dashboard and store changed to meet people's needs. I'm sure Nintendo will do plenty of updates and new integration of systems as time goes on."

I just think they are challenges. Some are clever, and some are obviosly thrown in at the last minute. If devs put in a clever or difficult acheivement, I like to at least have a crack at it. No harm, no foul.

The way some folk talk about 'em, you'd think you have to obtain them to complete the game.

I never cared about achievements on Xbox or PS3 and never understood why they were included.

For some people, they add to the game once it is complete. Some games use it as a cop-out to add longevity, but some really get creative and make the longevity fun.

Achievements / Trophies can be a reward or a method to psychologically get you to play a game past when you find it enjoyable.

This is a great example - http://www.penny-arc...the-skinner-box

I've broken any obsession with trophies / achievement unlocks quite some time ago. When a game stops being fun, I just stop playing it.

i dont really understand achievements either. sure, they can add some life to a game, or present a new challenge for the player. but, in the end, so what? oh boy i got the Platinum trophy in <whatever> game!

And most of the time they end up forcing you to do tedious, repetitive tasks ad nauseum to unlock them. "OMGz I need 2 kill 60,000,000 zombiezz with only mah fistses!!!1111"

right - so, if you have 8000 trophies on the PS3. who cares? what happens when the PS4 comes out? you have zero.

It's all about epeen.

People, today, can't seem to enjoy a game without some sort of positive reinforcement.

OMG LOOK AT MY GIANT PEENER YOU NOOB11!1!!!1

I doubt trophies/achievements will be reset when the next generation is out. They're already cross-platform. Vita/PS3 , W8/WP8/XBOX. The new consoles will just be another platform you can access your account from.

Yeah but does it really add to the game if they are system wide instead of in-game. Personally i don't think so.

It's not like the achievements is a new concept. There has been achievement since the day of Sierra games. The points system in Sierra games was an archaic achievements system.

System wide achievements are great but there's 2 sides to the medal. Sometime devs just don't care and add them because they have to and not because they want to. More often than never achievements in 360/Steam games are dumb, easy and/or tedious to get and you feel like they have been slapped in at the last minute because they had to be there.

New achievement unlocked you just killed 10 mobs houuuraayyyyy :| next one you need to kill 6000 0000 00 0 00 0 0 0 0 mobs ... okay ... :|

I think Nintendo should add system wide achievements but i don't think this is a deal beraker.

I hope though we will be able to delete them if we want to next gen. One thing i want added to XBox Live is the ability to delete a game from my games list. Sometime i'm borrowing a game for a weekend, complete 2-3 useless and irrevelant achievements like killing 10 mobs or finishing the first level on normal difficulty and then the game is there in my game list forever and i just don't care about it and would love to remove it.

Anyway i never found a way to remove them maybe there's one i don't know (i cancelled my sub 2 years ago maybe it's possible now).

PS3 had for a very short time to delete a game from the game history if you did not unlock a trophy, however that feature was removed the following system update.

Xbox360 has that ability (as long as not achievements earned) but not sure if that's still true.

My gut tells me Sony/MS will carry over existing account trophies in to the next gen. I think too many gamer's will throw a fit if it didn't copy over.

Honestly, I love achievements but I don't think system wide achievements are necessary. The whole player score thing isn't something I really get into. But I do really like the challenge achievements such as killing a boss in an interesting way. Those kinds of things can be completely implemented in-game and still be just fine.

except if they're implemented in each game, then you end up with the mess that PSN was int he start, a terrible online system without a central plan, structure or idea, making EA and many other companies create their own online systems half outside of PSN instead of one unified system. basically, Nintendo is repeating the mistakes of Sony and PSN, one generation behind(or half a generation in their case), when they should know better.

and then you also get different achievements for each game instead of having a central system, and you have to be in the game to see the achievements.

And most of the time they end up forcing you to do tedious, repetitive tasks ad nauseum to unlock them. "OMGz I need 2 kill 60,000,000 zombiezz with only mah fistses!!!1111"

No. You choose whether or not you want to actually obtain the acheivement. No one is forced to do anything.

Gonna go out on a limb and assume they will carry over to next-gen PSN / XBL. Vita has trophies as well tied to the same PSN. Even GFWL and the few games that supported those achievements were tied to your XBox Live account.

    • Honestly that feels even more useless than it did when Win11 was first released. In 2021, the uproar was somewhat justified, but only when comparing how good we've had it since Windows 7. Prior to that, a new Windows release would often require new, or very recent hardware. Windows XP wouldn't run (in any usable way) on hardware released when it's predecessor Win98 was released (let's ignore ME). It was time to shift the goal post, and the way Microsoft did that was actually ok. People have still had another FIVE YEARS of free software support with Windows 10, and those of us who want to have used these tools to bypass the limitations, all while understanding the impacts that may have. Most laptops don't last 5 years (sadly), so now the youngest unsupported hardware is 9 years old, and apparently has another year of support with Windows 10. That's good. Meanwhile, understanding the impacts and limitations, I have my 2013 laptop running Win11 perfectly fine. The thing that's failing on it is the hardware, the 2.5" SATA cable/chip is failing and corrupting the SSDs I put in. Thankfully it has a functional M.2 sata drive that works fine!
    • iPhone 18 Pro drop-test video and photos leak on the dark web following a data breach by Hamid Ganji iPhone 17 Pro - Image via Apple Apple is seemingly facing one of the biggest data breaches in its history, and just a few months before the official debut of the iPhone 18 Pro series, photos, a drop-test video, a supplier list, and key phone components have reportedly been leaked by hackers. Last week, we reported that Tata Electronics, an Apple supplier and iPhone producer in India, was hit by a data breach. As a result, it was reported that more than 200,000 trade secrets and confidential documents belonging to Apple and Tesla were stolen by the ransomware group World Leaks. According to Reuters, the group has now leaked supplier lists, component details, and photos of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models on the dark web. One of the materials leaked by the hackers is a drop-test video of the iPhone 18 Pro, which is due to launch this September. The phone is shown in a gray color and has the same familiar design we saw on last year's iPhone 17 Pro series. The device also appears to be quite durable, though it seems to be thicker than last year's model. One possible explanation is that Apple may be using a larger battery in the iPhone 18 Pro series. Moreover, Reuters says it has seen at least six documents mapping many components in the iPhone 18 Pro models to their respective suppliers, including details on chips on the main circuit board and on battery and camera components. The documents reportedly detail hundreds of parts that will be used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. A person familiar with the matter told the outlet that Apple classifies this data as sensitive and “is concerned about the documents being shared on the dark web as they relate to unreleased models.” Apple is reportedly investigating the issue but has yet to issue an official statement.
    • You do you, I've just said that it first appeared in "home" version before it will be available in "work" one. I use Edge only because it still supports MV2 uBO extension even on Android - I'll switch when they stop.
    • I imagine that was a review or something? My reviews mostly contain a lot of images and galleries, but these are all webp too, but yeah it all adds up on the page load. Would help if you were more helpful with your critique instead of bitching and moaning like a Karen 😂 Because then we might be able to fix it for you.
    • If Valve refused to let them make the case, I wonder if they've already partnered with someone else to do it? The fact that they didn't seek permission/licence before diving straight in is incredible though
