I do not remember doing anything to enable it, but I have a menu bar in the Control Panel that I cannot get rid of. Attached Image: controlPanelMenuBar.PNG

The same menu bar appears in my Contacts folder. Attached Image: conactsMenuBar.PNG

In the Contacts folder, I go to Organize -> Layout and Menu Bar is not checked. If I check it and un-check it, the menu bar does not hide or show.

Also, the alt button does not hide it.

Can anyone help me get rid of the menu bar?

You have a tough situation there. Your problem can be caused by many things. Some of the things that can cause this is "Registry hacks" or cleaners, Apps that change the User interface like an app that adds the Start menu back. But, the most common reasons this happens is due to user account corruption. If you changed a system setting or installed an update or an app and did a cold shutdown before windows can write to the registry then you've just corrupted your account. Now if you can't find a solution then you may want to create another user account and move everything over to the new account. Good Luck :)

Open the control panel, click Tools -> Folder Options -> View. Uncheck Always show menus, click apply.

Thanks for the responses! Always show menus is already unchecked. I'll try creating a new user account shortly.

sfc /scannow didn't find any errors. I created a new user and it did not have the problem, so I think it is safe to assume there is some corruption on my current account. I'll just migrate everything. Thanks for your help everyone.

How about hitting the Alt key? that usually turns the menu bar off/on.

He said the alt key doesn't work as he stated in his post. Read carefully next time.

I've had a similar issue in windows 7 and this is the fix I used. http://computerboom....lorer-menu.html
Its for vista but it applied to windows 7 too, so may be of use for windows 8 also.

I appreciate the link, but I've already deleted the problematic user account.

Next time if it happens again, try to right click on it, and select "Lock toolbars".

Does the menu bar go away in all other windows?
