For anyone experiencing a loss of ability to mount ISOs in Windows 8, if you have recently installed iTunes 11, this caused the loss for me.

Interesting I installed it to purchase the Remix CD All that you do by Stereo Flow. $9.99 Xbox Music, 5.99 iTunes.

Last time when I checked it, it didn't cause this particular issue either. I think it might've just replaced the default choice of mounting the image with something else.

No, that's the first thing I checked. It opens with Explorer and has all the proper context menu options to mount or burn. With all you get the busy cursor for about 10 minutes before it times out and reports could not mount. Could be something unique with other installed software I have, but the cause was iTunes 11.

I wanted to keep it given the major price differences but I use ISOs regularly, so I'll have to install on demand for now.

Win Pro 8 x64

iTunes 11 x64

Obviously any software that can handle images can override the Win 8 mounting when you double click an image, 7-Zip can do it for example if you tell it to associate with *.iso.

All you need to do to re-associate is to right click an iso and select to open them with Windows Explorer and tick the checkbox so it does so in the future.

Pretty much

just tried it, thats awesome! its so much faster than daemon tools too!

nice work ms :)

OP: you can install daemon tools, that will let you mount ISOs and keep iTunes, i know its just a workaround. At least it will work though :)

As I stated in response to someone else, it is NOT an association problem. They are associated and try to mount with Explorer. With iTunes 11 installed, Explorer times out trying to mount them. On my system anyway.

I don't buy a whole lot, but if I do an what I purchase continues to be 50% cheaper on iTunes than on Xbox Music store, I will go with Daemon Tools.

you can mount ISO's with win8?

So all this time ive been using Daemon tools for nothing?

DT is still better since it always mount in the same drive, whereas with iwndows 8 built in, every time you mount, it mounts on a new drive, unless you manually un-mount first.

i'm rather curious to hear of this.

if you uninstall itunes, does everything start working again?

Yes, absolutely.

I also have the Metro App hyperlink fail issue. I know what that is as well, Microangelo OnDisplay corrupts the HKLU CLSID key. Removing all entries doesn't work. Key must be deleted. I'm living without hyperlinks because I must have all my custom icons all over. Others have it, some have Microangelo, some do not. Legacy app oddities.

Microsoft confirmed June 23, 2026, that its Fairwater campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, is fully operational — and the engineering behind it makes the facility something fundamentally different from every data center that came before it. Where conventional cloud infrastructure racks up general-purpose servers and parcels out workloads to each one independently, Fairwater links hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 Blackwell GPUs into a single, coherent cluster using a two-story building design, 800-gigabit-per-second Ethernet fabric, and a proprietary networking protocol co-developed with OpenAI and NVIDIA. The result, according to Microsoft, is the closest thing to a purpose-built AI supercomputer that any company has ever placed in commercial operation. https://www.techtimes.com/articles/319205/20260627/microsoft-opens-fairwater-wisconsin-ai-campus-runs-one-supercomputer-via-800g-ethernet.htm
