A child advocacy worker is criticizing Sacramento County's response in the case of an 8-month-old boy who died after ingesting his mother's drug-laced milk.

A report by the Sacramento Bee says Child Protective Services took three months to fully respond to the case of a child considered at risk after tests found he was exposed to the drugs.

Ryder Salmen died September 2012 after overdosing on a fatal mix of Xanax, methadone and the painkiller Opana. Court documents said the infant's mother had been warned five months earlier to stop breastfeeding because of high levels of methadone found in her baby's bloodstream. The test came after Ryder, then 4 months old, was brought to a hospital because he was lethargic.

His mother, 32-year-old Sarah Ann Stephens of Citrus Heights, was charged recently with murder and two counts of child endangerment.

It's Cali, the odds of her having to actually face any repercussions are slim, they'll find some BS liberal reason to let her go with a warning once all the rage drops off

Kind of, is it when their own stupidity gets them killed? Or is it more when their stupidity strengthens the gene pool? If it's the latter than yes that technically qualifies. I'm not making light of this situation, it's terrible.

That's not murder..

It's thoroughly reprehensible, but it's not murder. Man slaughter I could live with, but not murder :\

Either way, some people need to be sterilised >.>

Legalized drugs would've come with education, therefore the baby may have survived?

Small warning sticker on the pill bottle that everyone will ignore most likely. (Especially those addicted to the drug)

Xanax, methadone and Opana are legal drugs. Now if she was using them legally prescribed fine, though methadone and Opana are very powerful painkillers and unlikely to be used the together, if street buys I imagine she would have been arrested.  Why she continued to breast feed is puzzling, unless she preferred to spend her money on the drugs. CPS dropped the ball on this too it appears.

inb4 "legalize drugs!"

Everything she was taking was legally prescribed to her although cocktails like this are never needed by anyone and should not be prescribed together. The doctor who prescribed all this to her is practically a legal, licensed, board certified drug dealer...

It's when a stupid person kills off their genetic lineage. Unfortunately in this instance it occurred after birth, which means that social services should have intervened.
