AMC orders a second season of 'Breaking Bad' spinoff 'Better Call Saul'

One of the shows we've been most excited about this year is the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul, and it appears AMC feels the same way: it's ordered a second season of the show before it has even debuted. The show focuses on the shady lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) that helped Walter White in the original show, and was scheduled for a 10-episode run for its first season. AMC is upping that for the second season, which will feature 13 episodes. The pilot, which began shooting earlier this month in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is being directed by Breaking Bad series mastermind Vince Gilligan.

Unfortunately for fans of the Goodman character, AMC is also pushing the show's debut date. Saul was originally targeted for release later this year, but AMC is now schedule the show to debut in the first quarter of 2015 (the second season will follow in the same timeframe in 2016). Better Call Saul is a Breaking Bad reunion on several fronts; Gilligan is running the show along with Peter Gould, who created the Goodman character as a writer on Breaking Bad. Thomas Schnauz and Gennifer Hutchison, both of which worked on the original series, are part of the writing staff as well.

"Production on Better Call Saul is underway and we could not be more proud of nor more excited about the work to date," AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement. "We have a strong history with Vince, Peter, Bob, the studio, and so many involved with this production; we are enjoying the process on Saul and all share a focus on making it a true television event. No half measures."

'Better Call Saul' Will Take Place Before, During and After 'Breaking Bad'

Breaking Bad producer Peter Gould recently sat down with NY Daily News and discussed the upcoming spin-off Better Call Saul. During the interview, he reveals that it will move back and forth over several decades and that we will possibly see the return of several fan loved characters including Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).

"One of the great things about having a time line which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before 'Breaking Bad,' during 'Breaking Bad,' and after 'Breaking Bad.' That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on 'Breaking Bad'."

He went on to explain how the show will differ from the original series.

"We want to make a show that stands on it own, is its own story and is a brand extension. We think we have a story that is worth making. ... We could never dream of the kind of success that 'Breaking Bad' had and the love we got from the fans. But, at a certain point you have to do the best job you can and tell the best story that entertains you, get a good response and hope people like it."

He wraps up the interview by expressing his excitement about being picked up for a second season by AMC.

"It's tremendous for us, because we get to plot out two seasons. And the way we work is similar to 'Breaking Bad' as it is very serialized and each episode builds on the last. And that gives us a much bigger canvas to play with."
