For me it varies, my 7 desktops all run ClassicShell's start menu so I can add a few things to the start menu, added a few more menu items, etc. My 8 desktops are a mix of ClassicShell and the built in start screen, depending on what that system's mainly doing. Probably going to switch them all to the built in once that new version of the start menu rolls around, the one that's half menu, half modern.

Classic Shell.

It's free and probably the most flexible. As far as I know, no other Start menu replacement offers so many options for customization. By itself, it allows the user to use three different Start menu styles, including my favorite style, Classic (or Windows 2000).

There's a nice comparison of Start menu replacements at http://classicshell.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2399&p=11787

Star8. Really looking forward to the official start menu Microsoft is adding. I always wanted someone to incorporate live tiles in the start menu while showing the list view for apps

Startisback for a 1:1 W7 start menu experience. I actually don't mind the start screen, I just don't really have a use for it.

Classic Shell of course. The rest are all much inferior as the comparison posted above shows and I doubt if Microsoft's new menu can match Classic Shell's  quality. They have lost it completely and have a very low quality bar. :p Classic Shell was made to fix the Windows 7/Vista menu itself because that's when Microsoft started going downhill.

As much as I stopped trying to purchase Stardock software after it's whole lack of development on Fences 1 and then charging loyal users for Fences 2 - I use Start8.  If you can find a good alternative then I encourage you to try and not put money into Stardock as they simply don't care about customers.

Yeah, I know! Unfortunately, a lot of my business involves working with Windows computers, so I keep myself up with the latest Windows stuff. I even alpha/beta tested Windows 8 years ago and added my voice to the incredible majority of testers who said "DO NOT USE THIS INTERFACE FOR WINDOWS 8!!". Of course, all those voices were ignored, and Windows 8 has proven to be a complete failure because of it. I have installed, at owner request, Start8 or one of the free equivalents to hundreds of computers since Windows 8 was released. Every single install was done within a week of the customers purchasing the computer. If you factor in the "trickle-down" effect of all those customers telling all their friends, the number is probably in the 100's of thousands. No surprise at all in my eyes!

ClassicShell gets my vote here as well, Free, Opensource, and classic explorer addon is pretty good too.

I used the good old metro, that is until my laptop got stolen. Now I use my Lumia 520. (cannot afford a new laptop, but I'm taking donations) Sucks, working all these hours, and bills eat up my whole paycheck.

I have found I don't need the "start menu" as it was up until Windows 8.  I know how to get around without it, and am doing just fine.  My mother-in-law uses the "start8" that comes with Advanced System Care 7 though.  Kinda threw me when I saw that for the first time trying to work on it one day!

Start Is Back is IMO the closest thing you're going to get to the native start menu in Windows 7.

Used Start8 before then switched to ClassicShell because Start8 doesnt allow sub-menu scrolling by just putting the mouse cursor on the arrows.

I really like Start8 as it fully emulates the feel of the windows 7 start menu, feels like it's part of the OS rather than a third party bolt on. Not a fan of the icon they use in the latest version but that's easy enough to fix.
