Yamauchi says Gran Turismo 7 will be with us in 2015 or 2016

The latest release estimate for PS4?s Gran Turismo 7 is some time over the next two years.
 
?For GT7, myself and my staff have a clear vision: to do everything we couldn?t do in GT6,? series creator Kazunori Yamauchi told GamesTM. ?We want to make it very Gran Turismo. By that I mean it?s going to be a game that matches the very era that we live in, in 2015 or 2016.
 
?Everything will be running naturally. PS3 was much, much more difficult. The high quality of data that we have being rendered on the PS4 I think is going to make an incredible difference.?
 
The series has a reputation for delays. PS2 title Gran Turismo 4 was delayed by a year and a half before arriving in early 2005 while Gran Turismo 5 was announced in 2006 but didn?t actually arrive until late 2010, and that was after a string of delays.
 
It looked as if Gran Turismo 6 would go the same way when in September last year Yamauchi said that the game was only ?80 per cent done? and later that the schedule was ?very tight?, although the PS3 racer did subsequently arrive as planned in December 2013.
 
Just prior to this, however, Yamauchi hinted that Gran Turismo 7 could arrive as early as this year, having suggested prior to this that the game could in fact be a re-jig of Gran Turismo 6 ? which was little surprise as sales of the game fell well short of the series standards, presumably due to the fact that it arrived after the launch of the PS3?s successor.
 
However, this summer Yamauchi admitted that a 2014 release was unlikely.

Gran Turismo 6 on PS3 was a NOT-needed product. I agree it was better experience compared to GT5, Polyphony got their priorities horribly wrong. 

 

Gran Truismo 6 should have been PS4 title with launch at Fall of 2014.

 

With Drive Club flopping, now we gotta wait for 2 more years to have a decent racer.

So GT7 will be around the time of FM6 or FH3....

And fans of GT won't care, so your point is Forza being pumped out yearly makes it the superior game?

Besides GT6 (which is still at 2.5-3m) no other PS platform exclusive sells like GT. Don't think Sony mind waiting a few years between releases.

and actually, GT fans do care. how much complaining has there been about GT's late release and delays. 

 

I also think Sony does care, and that's why Drive Club exist, as a poker to poke PD and get them into gear.

The Forza name is still going to a title each year. People would rather compare FH2 than F5 to Driveclub, so it just goes to show it doesn't matter if it's a spin off with the Forza name, people will compare it to anything racing related.

 

If you wanted to be fair in comparison as well, Horizon is actually made by Playground Games. GT would never be co-developed or given to another development studio, or even have a spin-off. If open world is going to come to GT it'll come within GT, just like kart racing or dirt-track racing or Nascar.

 

I agree the GT5 delays were a bit mental, but to a GT fan, with a PS, they're going to buy GT when it comes out regardless of what Forza is doing. The sales figures prove that, hence me saying if GT7 hits in 2015, or even 2016, it won't really matter what Forza has done, it'll sell just fine. You entered the GT7 release date topic just to say this is what Forza may have done by then, I answered that with a reply questioning what will it matter?

A lot of Racing/driving simulator fans(who care more about the sim aspect than the title of the game) has switched to Forza due to the release delays though.  their release schedule is ridiculous and inexcusable. there is no reason it should take this long. 

 

and it is unfortunate since We need GT release to create competition to make all games better.

What is this based on, your friends? Sure some people will have, but GT5 has hit over 10m sales - http://www.polyphony.co.jp/english/list.html

 

I don't think Sony/PD have to worry that much.

Was reading GTPlanet just now and stumbled upon this post from a member there that hit the nail right on the spot (Y) -
 

PD has already produced software that can run 16 ridiculously detailed cars (and now runs them with adaptive tessellation) in one frame, with a dynamic lighting engine and a day/night cycle, and a super-detailed dynamic weather system, all at (roughly) 1080p @ 60fps, on hardware with difficult architecture from 2006.

I have very little doubt that they can achieve 1080x1920 @60fps on dev-friendly architecture with about 16x the power.

Honestly I don't see why people have an ounce of worry in this regard, unless they try to do another visual cram on this generation, like combining 100 cars on track with perfect anti-aliasing, ray-tracing reflections, volumetric smoke/mist, and dynamic/interactive terrain/track borders in one sitting.

I would imagine they'll try to push the hardware as they always seem to do, but it seems they've learned from their past mistakes. It seems they felt it would be bad taste to go backwards from GT5's visuals, so they found ways to make them more efficient in GT6, while simultaneously increasing their strength. If I'm not mistaken, GT5 ran at 1080x1280, and then GT6 was upgraded to 1440 vertical... So PD is insane when it comes to their capabilities of data compression and efficiency.

 
PD should not really have any issues adapting to the PS4 hardware, if anything; development might go faster ( :laugh: ) but they still need to keep the current (GT6) user base happy with features that should have been in the game from the start, B-Spec/Course Maker to name a few and the magical sound update but I guessing that in particular is destined for GT7. Just hope they deliver on their promises on next-gen hardware ....
 
IIRC Dan Greenawalt said in an interview last year that Forza 5 is steering away from the hardcore simulation racer as in previous games and merging more gaming to the franchise (with Drivatar as an example). It's a decent game but lacks things I find in the GT series - day/night cycles on most tracks, manual pit stops, realistic fuel consumption/tire degradation and dynamic weather.

I'm one of them. I had cash in hand to buy Gran Turismo 5, but got frustrated and went with Forza. Been very happy with it even though F5 was a bit rushed.

To bad that part isn't actually true though.  unless by "roughly" he means "a completely diffrent much lower resolution"

I genuinely think the game could be out next year, in Nov/Dec. The PS4 is much easier to develop for, and the turnaround for GT6 was quick.

 

The only thing I think that could hold it back is Kaz's "visions". He kept saying he wanted some sort of real world/open world simulator added to GT5. I think for GT7 just do what makes sense, GT with tons of content and cars, and taking advantage of the PS4, instead of the grind on the PS3 to get the high resolution/60fps/weather and everything else you wonder how they managed.

I've just never gotten into the GT series, they always seemed slow to me. They also really gotta implement damage models in this damned game

Forza 5 and FH2 made my choice for the next console.  Got the XBOne instead of the PS4, even if I own a PS3.

 

As of right now, nothing on the PS4 come close to Forza 5 or FH2.

If Horizon is a good game, its a good game, regardless of developer. I'm not sure what kind of 'critique' your trying to make other than you see no point is having separate games that cater to different styles. If GT wants to integrate more arcade styles, then great. I'm just not sure that is what most GT fans want.

The proper GT comparison is still the standard Forza games. So when GT 7 is out that might be Forza 6. Horizon may have sim elements, but its clearly more focused on the open world arcade style. GT is all about the sim focus along with Forza.

Actually, you might only have to wait another month; Project CARS comes out in November and I'm pretty confident that'll satisfy most Gran Turismo fans while they're waiting for GT7.

Ah ok that is much clearer.

As you pointed out, Turn 10 will continue to focus just on main Forza while Playground works on Horizon.
