Need help upgrading from window 8.1 OEM to 8.1 pro

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I got a new Dell XPS 8700 desktop which came with Windows 8.1 OEM version. Now I would like to upgrade to 8.1 pro. Is it possible to upgrade directly or do I have to do a clean install?

I tried with the adding features option but it says keys are valid but gives me "Something went wrong, close this wizard and try again" error.  No error codes.

When I attempted to change product key option, it says "key can't be used to activate this edition of windows. Please try a different key" No error codes.

I extensively use the remote desktop option between different systems in my house. With the Basic 81. OEM version, I can only do RDP in, but I can't do RDP out.

The key I am using is my microsoft technet key for window 8.1 pro.

Need some help understanding what is happening here.

Will calling Microsoft help?

Thanks

Go to control panel and choose system. See if there is an option that says "add more features to Windows 8". Click on that and see if it takes the key. If that works then it just changes a few files and unlocks the pro features. If not then you might have to do a clean install if your getting errors with the upgrade.

you cannot upgrade your OEM copy of windows 8.1 to a pro version using the technet keys those keys are for lab clean installs only. non oem or retail installs do please refer to the licence agreement that you signed when you purchased technet.

Calling Microsoft and telling them you are using Technet keys at home, probably not a good idea. :pinch:

Read the licencing, you're allowed to use a lot of keys for business & home.

I thought technet is for testing the product and not to use in commercial production environment, nothing specific about home use. May be I don't understand the terms fully. I guess I will stick to whatever OS came with my system then. Thanks for your replies.
