PC World Calls PS3 a mistake

PlayStation 3: Late, expensive, and incompatible

When it was announced in spring 2005, the Sony PlayStation 3 was going to be the greatest thing to hit home gaming since a hedgehog named Sonic. Then came the delays. By the time the PS3 arrived, it was six months late, and Nintendo's cheaper and more innovative Wii had stolen much of its thunder. At $599 for the 60GB model, the PS3 is twice the price of the original PlayStation 2, yet research firm iSupply -- which describes the PS3 as having supercomputer qualities--estimates that Sony still loses more than $200 per unit.

Thanks to manufacturing delays, Sony shipped an estimated 150,000 units for the North American launch, or less than half the number it had originally planned. And the PS3 was incompatible with more than 200 PlayStation and PS2 games, though Sony is addressing that problem through online updates.

The good news? Game-crazed youth are buying up PS3s and reselling them on eBay for double the asking price. And unlike, say, Sony batteries, they don't catch fire...at least, not yet.

Big mistake: Trying to turn a supercomputer into a gaming device.

Bigger mistake: Failing to drive a stake through the heart of Nintendo when the opportunity offered.

If the PS3 is incompatible with 10% of PS2 games - what is X360 with its 80% incompatible games? handicapped?

No because Microsoft, unlike Sony, never promised full backward compatibility.

That comment made me chuckle and I am all for the 360

Ken Kutaragi as promised backward compatibility in 2003 for the PS3. Microsoft did not promise anything, afaik.

Ironman273 did a better post about it :D

While that's a fact, here's the reality. Xbox originally announced that the 360 would not run Xbox games. Awww.. oh well. PS3 on the other hand, would have a mini PS2 in it so it would be 100% backwards compatible! Yay! Fast forward to today, Microsoft decided to step up and completely create a software compatibility that improves selected Xbox games on the 360. Sony, on the other hand fell short of their promise and, as is covered in another thread, makes some PS2 games look horrible.

That's the big difference between the 2.

Oh, and BTW, this:

The good news? Game-crazed youth are buying up PS3s and reselling them on eBay for double the asking price.
not so much anymore...

No, no, no... you're not getting it. Backwards compatibility on the 360 was a bonus! No one expected it. Backwards compatibility on the PS3 was announced as a feature! You really don't see the difference there? And on top of it, on the thread about the crappy performance of PS2 games some PS3 fans are excusing it by saying they shouldn't be playing PS2 games! C'mon, you guys are really trying to play it both ways.

He really is getting it, you're the one who isn't getting it. Sony officially announced that all titles from their previous consoles would be able to run on the Playstation 3. Along with a lot of other features, the Playstation 3 no longer has this. However, the xbox 360 was a console that didn't announce about it's backwards compatibility until later on when they said some of the newer, more mainstream titles would run on it, it wasn't originally anticipated and hyped up like the Playstation 3 was.

F to the ailure I'd say.

IIRC the PS3 even had the PS2 processor inside so it could run the games, right? What a joke.

In response to the blind fanboy that really, really likes to get into denial, Huleboeren (Don't even say you got a 360.It doesn't because you are probably one of the biggest PS3 zealots in the forum).

Sorry, but games looking like crap or barely running is not a pro (since probably some of those problems won't be ever fixed) IT'S MORE OF A CON. Another thing is that while 360 may not run every Xbox game, it's just a matter of time since the list grows pretty quickly and the games: a) Look good, b) Run good.

NOW THAT'S A PRO.

These types of derogatory remarks have consequences beyond the stupidity of the person who made them.

I think that they are doing ok. We will see what will happen next year as this year it just came out. :) We can't say who will win yet or lose as we don't know.

Plus I don't think PcWorld thinks that the PS3 will do good. They are Wii fans. :(

Nintendo to Sony: Don't wound what you can't kill.....

So true. I think the Wii could win this gen actually, people are really getting into it... as long as they don't injure themselves ;) haha
