msnbot , ie7 , longhorn

MSN Search is currently the #3 search engine by queries worldwide. It's also the most profitable unit at Microsoft by headcount (they have less than 50 people and did $150 million in profit last year).

They currently outsource all their searches to Inktomi and LookSmart, with ads embedded through a partnership with Overture. Now that Inktomi is owned by Yahoo (the #2 search engine), they feel it's in their best interests to build their own infrastructure.

They have Google in their crosshairs. They are trying to replicate every feature of Google in the next year, and have tie-ins with the next version of IE (including a 'search' box right on the browser toolbar that by default points at MSN Search) and in Windows Longhorn (the Search function in the shell will have an Internet option that will go to MSN by default). They made a build-vs-buy decision in the last few months (in fact they made an informal offer to purchase Google, which was refused).

MSN Search is biased. It will never over take Google.

People like to enter search terms and not have the results filtered based on the views of the company who has ownership of the search engine.

Google:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-...e=UTF-8&q=linux

MSN:

http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=linux...SMCRT&x=45&y=13

Search result #3 on the msn page is amusing.

Follow down the results.

On Google you have sites like billgatesisdead.com, and the Unofficial Bill Gates site ranking right in on the first results page along with the official microsoft Bill Gates site and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

A very wide array of Bill Gates information from the positive to the negative.

On MSN, the first search result page is pretty much all positive Gates sites may being official microsoft or encarta pages, and biographies.

I think Google comes out on top for presenting a wider spectrum right of the bat, its neat how the Google's page ranking gives a better balance of content right from the first results.

Search Neowin on Neowin and then on Google. You'll find our own Neowin search is also biased.

Bad example here..

Yeah. The point is by design Google isn't biased.

I can find good things about Neowin on Google, as well as bad things.

Yes. The Neowin search is biased. When it comes to searching the net though who wants a biased search engine?

Google also has weathered out issues regarding upholding content. The church of Scientology once took on Google when a scientology critic page ranked in at number 1 sending the cults official site to number 2.

Why settle for just one engine?

I use Copernic Agent and search everything....

I find that a get a good mix of biased vs. unbiased results....

I split my searches b/t Google & MSN. Since I use the MSN client if my search query is fairly generic I will just type it into the address bar. It ends up being quicker for me. Plus, MSN Search v7 is much cleaner & quicker than it used to be. I know that Google does a much better job with relevancy & has a deeper index...so I go there when I need real accuracy.

So despite my MSN bias, I tend to use Google fairly often. Tho I prefer Yahoo! Image Search display design over Google's...but the content is still derived from Google.

MSN Search has a lot of users right now...granted a number of them are inadvertant, but if MSN made crucial improvements to the service people may not be so inclined to look for another search engine.

Google wins hands down today...we'll see where we are at in a couple years. ;-)

FWIW...MSN Search v8 is still on track for later this summer/early fall. It will have an XSL/XML rendering architecture which should be interesting from an end-user perspective.

I think it's mainly because with Google, it is focused on one major thing, being a great search engine. MSN Search on the other hand, is one little product among hundreds, causing it to be lesser in quality....

and, Google is so small and quick loading, which is an instant plus.

google will always win here as msn is too bloated, like what is said above, just take a look at yahoo they have recently cut down the amount of clutter on their default page. plus no-one can beat googles results as you will always find what your looking for - well nearly always. :)
