As the launch of the two flagship phones from Huawei draws closer, we have seen a number of leaks regarding their specifications slowly trickle out. Israeli site Girafa, however, has spilt all the beans about the phones" specifications.
Leaked promotional materials obtained by the site indicate that earlier rumours about the Mate 20 Pro"s battery capacity were right, and the phone is slated to include a 4,200 mAh battery. The Mate 20, on the other hand, will be powered by a 4,000 mAh battery, a 21% increase from the last generation.
The two phones will share a lot in common. They will, of course, be the first phones to feature Huawei"s latest smartphone SoC, the Kirin 980, that alongside the A12 Bionic, is among the first mobile processors based on a 7nm architecture. The two phones will also be able to charge up to 70% of their battery capacity in 30 minutes via Super Charge 2.0, and will also support quick wireless charging up to 15W.
The camera setup on the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro (codenamed Hima and Laya) will be identical. Round back, there"s a triple-camera setup which replaces the telephoto lens from the P20 Pro with an ultra-wide angle lens. The selfie shooter will be 24MP. They will also come with the usual suite of AI features from Huawei, alongside something the company is calling HiVision, which is supposed to be Huawei"s equivalent to Google Lens.
Both phones will also start with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which will be expandable. However, unlike most phones, they will not support microSD cards, instead opting for a new, smaller form of flash memory called nanoSD.
Audiophiles will be pleased to know that both phones retain an audio jack and that they have a stereo speakers setup. Productivity-minded users are also catered to with a wireless projection feature that aims to create a PC-like experience for users connected to a bigger screen, akin to Samsung"s DEX. We"ll likely get more details about that at the official launch event on October 16.
Apart from battery life, the differences between the phones boil down to the size of the notch (the Pro model will have a larger notch, while the Mate 20 will have a "waterdrop" notch), the screen size and resolution (QHD+ vs FHD+), and the authentication technologies. With the larger notch on the Mate 20 Pro, Huawei was able to fit in the necessary sensors for 3D facial recognition like the iPhone X, while the Mate 20 will only feature 2D facial recognition. The Pro version will also feature an in-display fingerprint sensor, while the regular model will have a sensor placed on the back chassis.
The Mate 20 will also be slightly less durable than its larger sibling, featuring IP53 certification compared to the Mate 20 Pro"s IP67.
Pricing for the phones in Israel will be NIS 3,000 ($836) for the Mate 20 and NIS 4,000 ($1,115) for the Mate 20 Pro. How these numbers will change for other markets is, of course, not yet known and will likely be revealed at Huawei"s launch event.
