Lord of the Rings RPG in development at Kingdom Come Deliverance studio

There is a new game in development set in Tolkien"s Middle-earth universe, and confirming some previous rumors, the Embracer-owned developer Warhorse Studios is the one tackling the project. There is only a simple confirmation for now, which arrived alongside another announcement revealing that the studio is also working on a new Kingdom Come experience.

The social media post with the double announcement only calls the new RPG an open-world experience set in Middle-earth. It"s unclear if this will be in the same era that The Lord of the Rings story takes place in or focus on a different event.

For those unfamiliar with the developer, Warhorse Studios has been making the popular Kingdom Come games since its inception in 2011, putting out Kingdom Come: Deliverance in 2018 and a sequel in 2025. The medieval Bohemia-set role-playing games give massive focus to immersion and historical accuracy. We will have to wait and see if the same slow but powerful gameplay systems will return for the Middle-earth project too, perhaps giving players the perspective a new hero that helps the struggle for the One Ring.

"You might have heard the rumours, it"s time to reveal what we are working on," said the studio today on a social media post. "We’re excited to tell you more when the time is right."

As for the second reveal, the new Kingdom Come project announcement doesn"t say if this will be a full-blown third entry or perhaps a story expansion to Kingdome Come: Deliverance II. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the title has sold over five million copies, six months into launch.

The studio is also moving to be a part of Fellowship Entertainment, a separate publishing group that Embracer Group is spinning off that will also contain developers like 4A Games, Crystal Dynamics, Dambuster Studios, Eidos Montreal, Flying WildHog, and Gunfire Games.
