If you live in the United States and you want to purchase a brand-new PlayStation 5, the Japanese maker has some unfortunate news for you. Starting August 21, 2025, all three versions of the console are going up in price. Just like Microsoft several months ago, Sony is making a "difficult decision" to increase the price of its consoles in an attempt to "navigate a challenging economic environment."
Sony is increasing the price of its consoles by $50 for the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 Pro, while the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is going up in price by $100. Here are the new prices next to the previous:
| New | Old | Delta | |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | $549.99 | $499.99 | $50 |
| PlayStation 5 Digital Edition | $499.99 | $449.99 | $50 |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | $749.99 | $699.99 | $50 |
Unlike Microsoft, which increased the price of the entire hardware set, including controllers and headsets, Sony is not changing how much its gamepads, headsets, and other accessories cost. The change only applies to consoles, leaving the price of everything else untouched.
This is the third time Sony has made its consoles more expensive. However, the previous two left gamers in the United States unaffected. At first, Sony bumped the price in 2022, when the PlayStation 5 became more expensive on its domestic market in Japan, Australia, Europe, the UK, and some other countries. The second price increase hit the UK and European countries in April 2025. Several months later, the same is happening to gamers in the United States.
It is certainly disappointing to see a four-year-old console going up in price. Previously, consoles would become more affordable as they went deeper into their lifecycle, thanks to more refined manufacturing, their tech becoming cheaper, and more. This time, however, we have a complete U-turn both in the world of Xbox and PlayStation.
