Todd Howard reveals The Elder Scrolls VI is "still a long way off"

2018 was seven years ago, and that was when Bethesda Game Studios officially announced The Elder Scrolls VI. While the company has released titles like Fallout 76, Starfield, and an Oblivion remaster since then, the hugely anticipated sequel to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been missing in action. Now, studio and game director Todd Howard has asked fans to be patient, as it seems the title is not coming out anytime soon.

The latest information about the game"s status has arrived via a GQ interview with Todd Howard. According to the director, The Elder Scrolls VI is "still a long way off," explaining that he doesn’t want fans to "feel anxious" about the long wait.

"I do like to have a break between them, where it isn’t like a “plus one” sequel," adds Howard when asked about making a new Elder Scrolls again. "I think it’s also good for an audience to have a break – The Elder Scrolls has been too long, let’s be clear. But we wanted to do something new with Starfield. We needed a creative reset."

Not much information about the RPG has been released to the public just yet. The title moved to full production status at Bethesda in 2023 just as Starfield arrived to the masses. Considering how long role-playing games of that depth take to make, the project might be aiming for the next console generation already.

"We have hundreds of people on Fallout right now, with 76 and some other things we"re doing, but The Elder Scrolls 6 is the everyday thing," explained Howard.

Howard said that if he had the chance, he would release games suddenly without making a formal announcement, much like how the company handled The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. "My perfect version – and I’m not saying this is going to happen – is that it"s going to be a while and then, one day, the game will just appear," teased the game director.
