Avira AntiVir 9 now searches and removes viruses even more efficiently ? helping you stay safe

Tettnang, 17 March 2009 ? Faster, easier, more secure! Highlights of the ninth generation of Avira AntiVir include and enhanced scan engine, parental control and support for netbooks.

Fresh from the laboratory, we present Avira AntiVir Personal, Avira AntiVir Premium and Avira Premium Security Suite. Programmers at the German high-tech security powerhouse have given the user interface a facelift and improved user guidance. A configuration assistant takes the user by the hand and helps them to adapt the configuration quickly and easily to their personal needs. What?s inside is important, too: multi-processor and multi-core systems support allows the anti-virus solution to be up to 20 % faster.

Avira Premium Security Suite now provides parents with parental control that is uncomplicated to use: simply assign ready-made profiles for children, teenagers and adults to your Windows user accounts ? and you and your children will no longer be faced with unsuitable content when surfing. Administrators can create their own profiles and specify sites that are always allowed or prohibited, regardless of the chosen profile. Another bonus is WebGuard now features a ?Fraud? category, which filters out fraudulent sites. Avira is cooperating with consumer protection agencies to maintain an extensive list of websites that involve subscription payments and fraudulent information.

Dealing with viruses is now child?s play. The Avira designers have modified the virus protection so that the user is no longer asked how to proceed each time malware is discovered. Instead, a complete search can take place and at the end the user will find all malware in a clearly arranged list, which can be wiped from the hard drive with the click of a mouse.

If you are one of the growing number of netbook owners, you will be pleased to hear there are adapted screen dialogs in the AntiVir-9 products. These allow the virus protection to be used, without problem, on the small screens typical of netbooks. The hearts of gamers will beat faster, too: the ?Game mode? in Avira Premium Security Suite now automatically recognizes when a game is started, and suppresses all firewall messages for the duration of the game. The programmers have endowed the Avira firewall with a new ?Privileged mode? which users can use to enable applications in general, when installing trusted software that requires access to certain ports or network adapters. This highly practical method means that you no longer have to set up separate rules.

The new products are available now from Avira?s online shop at www.avira.com. What hasn?t change is the price: as a single-user license, Avira AntiVir Premium costs ?19.95 including one year?s updates, ? 5 of which is donated to the charitable Auerbach Foundation. Avira?s Premium Security Suite costs ? 39.95. Avira will be able to upgrade to the new version free of charge!

Any in your face ad for this free version ?

I always get a window load up when it updates on the free version but todays window was about version 9.0 might just stick with 8 for now tho until I am forced.

Any in your face ad for this free version ?

they have to support the free version somehow....

so yes, there is an ad when you update like there always has been. one ad when you update in exchange for the best virus protection, hardly seems worth complaining about. especially since you can disable it if you are truely incapable of dealing with a single ad

Yes.

actually it does not upgrade, the installer only removes your old version and reboots the pc to install the new. you also loose all customized user settings. is it just me or have they made this simple program a bit too complicated to set up at install?

It said in the license information window that the license would auto renew 4 weeks before expiration.

but it'll still expire

I like avira instead of AVG because this notification will force you to update your antivirus (with AVG, especially 7.5 it tells you to upgrade, but doesn't tell you when it'll expire.

It auto updates within the application. Has nothing to do with updating the actual program, IIRC.

How well does the free version protect your computer? (based on rankings, or anything data like that). Also, is there a significant difference between the free version and the version you pay for, in terms of performance in the main areas of concern?

Also, how much memory does it take, and can you feel a noticeable affect when it's installed (slowdowns and stuff?)

I am running Nod32 v3, and not that impressed... was running Norton 2009 before and I really liked it... May try Nod32 v4, but I will probably either go with Norton again or try this out
