Girl suspended from school for saying 'hell'

A grade two schoolgirl from Pittsburgh in the United States was suspended this week from her public elementary school for saying the word "hell" to a boy in her class.

But Brandy McKenith, 7, says she was only warning the boy about the eternal comeuppance he could face for saying, "I swear to God".

"I said, 'you're going to go to hell for swearing to God'," she was quoted as saying in an article that appeared on the website of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.

School officials were unavailable for comment. A Pittsburgh public schools spokeswoman told the newspaper the student code prohibits profanity but does not provide a clear definition of what profanity is.

The girl's parents, who said they believed their daughter's version of the story, were flabbergasted by the suspension and complained to the school principal.

"Kids are bringing guns and knives to school...they've got dope and we're worried about 'hell'," her father Wayne McKenith said.

Meanwhile, the incident drew the attention of civil liberties experts as far away as New York.

"There was no threat and the word was being used in its intended way, not in a vulgar manner," civil liberties attorney Christopher Murray said in a statement distributed by his New York law firm.

What do you all think? An odd one, isn't it?

schools are just stupid with some of the rules they have. i got detention for say "pi*s" once. lol as in someone pi*sed me off. how annoying. i feel sorry for that girl. hopefully the school changes it's policies and starts to take into account how the word is used.

WEAK. My kids school did that, I would be all over them. I am sick to death of these lame schools here in the US more so in California where I live, pulling this crap.

Get this, My son has cronic asthma, which causes him to miss school due to his lack of being able to breath. Well, I take him to see a DR. on a regular basis for checkups etc and to get down a med system that will keep him under control. The school he goes to (2nd Grade) knows this since day one when he started Kindergarten and I have always communicated with them regularly on the issue. Well I get a letter in the mail saying that the school board wants to review my sons absences. I go in and the DA is sitting there telling me I dont take an interest in my sons well being with school and his learning and that I was there for them to review if criminal charges should be filed for neglect. WTF!!!!! I told the guy what was up with his health and I even had a letter from his DR, there comment was well we need to do something to get him in school more because the school does not get paid when he misses. again WTF??? I told the guy ok, I will send him to school when he can barely breath and when he passes out on the play ground and has to be taken to the hospital I will be sure to file my suit against the school, city, and state that very day. They never bothered me again.

by the way, we are not talking a month of school missed here, we are talking mabey 1 day out of a month when he gets real bad.

Very odd, and what a waste of everybodies time. Surely the staff at the school have enough to do already without worrying about things like this.

Good, the little hussy got what she deserved. Hell, I'd recommend a firm spanking and whatever else her priest recommends.

you will now get a bill, for cleanup on my coke that came out of my mouth when i read your post. Also for your trouble you will get included at no charge a drawing of what my wife's face looked like when she said "what the hell is wrong with you!"

You do know that it was a joke, right? (I think.) Or was that a joke, too? Damn text-only communication! :pinch:

Dear god, does this sort of stuff happen all the time? I've heard lots of things about US public schools, and none of it good. Is it really that bad?

our schools are probably not as bad as it sounds to you. i'm sure you hear more negative stories than positive ones, if any. around here, yeah, the schools have problems. heck, at one school (note: one) it was not uncommon for students to carry guns/knives with them throughout the school day, until metal detectors were installed. but that doesn't mean all the students are dangerous... there are plenty of good kids in our schools, but the media likes the bad ones and they pounce on every story they can find.

btw, i'm talking about high schools. grades 9 - 12.
