Next PSP to get built-in camera, video streaming

The next version of Sony's PSP will sport an integrated digital video camera that will allow users to stream live video to the PlayStation 3, according to an anonymous source. The feature, which will utilize the PSP's Wi-Fi support, will be marketed as the new way to chat with friends while on the go.

According to the tipster, the "PSP 2" will also gain the recently rumored NAND flash storage, though the first generation of the new model will only be available with 4GB instead of the 8GB currently speculated. Sony will also trim approximately a quarter of inch from the device, and offer it in three color choices ? black, white and silver.

Sources claim that the tiny camera will be an off-the-shelf stock unit that is currently being used in several Sony Ericsson mobile phones, and will also allow users to take still photos, in addition to video. Its placement will be directly below the PSP's screen, where the "PSP" logo can currently be found.

The new PSP's video streaming capabilities will be considered a must-have addition for Sony's upcoming PS3 console. While details are scant at this point, sources say the streaming will be made possible through the upcoming HUB PlayStation service, which will launch alongside the PS3 and compete directly with Microsoft's Xbox Live service.

We'll provide more details as they become available.

Sounds like the fake PSP my friend got from China! With the camera and stuff. But it does not beat the PSP. Some of these pics show the PSP copy made by JXD Electronics. A chinese company that steals the design of popular electronics and make crap electronics. Here are some pics.

I hope the new PSP has a better camera than this thing(The picture and video quality on this thing is crystal clear.)

The PSP and this copy are really really similar. But PSP has more functions that work properly.

Too bad the first one has been mostly crap so far...

Maybe Sony is playing everyone for suckers, the games are just the lead-in, everything else just makes it seem like they only care about multimedia aspects. More movies, addition of RSS audio, possibly e-mail, video downloads, web browser (although nearly useless), etc. Now, rumors of added memory (seems like it would cannibalize MS Duo sales), streaming content, a stupid camera, blah, blah, blah. Only things missing are an FM radio, TV out and line-in recording.

And better games, no rumors of a Wipeout sequel.

if they bring out a PSP2, i personally will be miffed, they dont even have a lot of games for the PSP1, and almost garenteed no compatability of the PSP1 with PSP2 game's. thus leaving PSP1 phased out

I think if they do this it'll be like a "DS -> DS Lite" thing. An upgrade I guess you can say.

This makes more sense, but it better be at a lower price.

I think it's far too early to release a PSP2 when the PSP1 should still have a lot of life left in it, at least 2 years.

i agree. and those nand drives have to be pretty expensive, don't they?

i would feel pretty alienated if they released a psp2 this year or even q1 or q2 of 2007.

I think all PSP owners would be.

But to be honest, I can't really see them putting out a new PSP, in the same time period as people are rumering the PS3 is to be released in.

My PSP arrived this morning with Colin McRae 2005 and GTA:LCS, i love it :D

So if a PSP2 was going to be introduced anytime soon, i think i would kill the person sitting closest to me..

i dont think i will just be killing the person closest to me.. :p

i think Sony would be stupid to release a PSP2 before the end of 2007, there will be a lot of unhappy people out there

^ Well it all depends on if the same games will work on both systems equally. It's not like people have to re-purchase their music collections whenever they upgrade iPods - or that their older songs will be inferior in some way.

4GB FLASH memory and a camera? Enjoy your $600 rerelease -_-

Oh yeah. They will fly off the shelves at that price won't they. I am sure that is an economically viable product upgrade. The camera is the same used in sony camera phones and 4GB of nand is going to come in at about $16. http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20060223PR203.html

Alot less in 8 months time.

My guessing is they will update in time for christmas. The price will be the same or maybe slightly less. As they will have refined production and need to fight the updated DS.

man, whoever buys a psp or this so called psp2 gotta be the biggest idiot. look at the "library" of games psp has. simply pathetic. with its specs, it should be wow-ing us and taking over the hand held market like a tornado... but no games. seriously, psp movie to game ratio is like 100:1.

and god, who the hell buys a dvd priced movie to watch on a tiny screen?! what an insane world/audience this market is...
