[Contest] $100 for Site Layout and Logo

Question

Uptifree.com Contest:

The past couple weeks I have been redesigning the entire backend of the site. Now that its just about done, its time for the front end. I'm not any good with graphic design, so I thought I would offer the opportunity for someone to make some money!!!

Payment:

Winner will receive $100.

Payment will be made via PayPal Only.

Guidlines:

Try to keep things simple.

Nothing hard to navigate.

Currently, I'm open to all color schemes. As long as it's not bright pink/lime green, etc.

Must be original, no copycat designs.

Must have spaces for Google ads.

Winner must be willing to help with other pages on the site (besides initial index page).

No coding required. This is for the images only.

Timeframe:

This contest will end on Tuesday March 7th, 2006 at 9:00 AM PST. At that time, no further entries will be accepted.

Picking the Winner:

Once the contest is over (see above), I will start a poll. At that time Neowin members will be able to vote for their favorite design. This does not guarantee that the most voted design will win, as I will pick the winner but the poll will weigh heavily on my decision.

Current Mockup:

Here is the current mockup of the redesign. So keep this in mind when making your design.

Final Words:

Good luck to all, and may the best design win!

Was working on this whilst reasing through your other thread.

The members bar at the top doesn't have to stay, it can be moved into the bar below the main banner.

The little black thing above 'faq' is meant to be the hover over bit. :p Anything can be changed.

Very nice. I dig the logo. It would need one more button up top for Hosting Plans (or similar naming). The color scheme is good, but the blue of the news box stands out and doesn't seem to go with the scheme.

I'd really like to enter, but I am completely without inspiration at the moment.. :(

Must say that the first two designs are both looking so very awesome.. Don't know if I could beat that anyway :p

I had that  it sucks but just chill for bit and soon you'll want to make something (Y)

Can I get in on the action? Both look good, like the first the best though.

Let's see what I can come up with if I get to play like these two.

You bet!!! Anyone is welcome to participate. The more, the better! Bring it on!

Slight update.

  • Removed the random rectangle which I left on the logo in the first mock-up. :|
  • Added 'hosting' link.
  • Changed colours of the boxes (I agree, the blue looked out of place).
  • Made logged in member view. There won't be 2 sets of links, I just didn't know where to put them so I showed you both ideas. I think they look better on the banner, personally.

Thanks for the comments people, and NICE design mail. (Y)

lol, i don't see why anyone else would bother applying. Those 2 are so good :p

I'm goin for number 1. While number 2 looks fantastic, number 1 seems a bit more practical (leaves room for ads, has news etc.). But then again you did want an image hostinf site where that was all it did. A nice simple thing, in which case 2 would be better

Gah, i dunno

Looks better. I like the box color changes. I like the navigation on the banner much better. I would say get rid of the top bar alltogether. I don't like that. I may want to also put a quick login on the front page, not sure about that just yet. Also, some ideas with the logo. Could you maybe stretch the arrow over the words upit and also (2nd one) over the entire upitfree.com? I want to see how it would look. Here is an mspain example (told you I'm not good @ graphics):

No doubt, this is already getting tough. :)

Could you maybe move the logo to the middle somewhere? I'm not sure I like it off to the side. Maybe get rid of the ribbon looking thing. Also add a .com to the end of upitfree and put the slogan for the site in there somewhere? The background looks nice, but would be tough to code correctly while keeping the load times down. Could you also add a spot for site news?

Keep up the great work guys!!!

So I came home this weekend to find that my computer didn't want to turn on. Perfect timing, especially since the design that I was working on is stuck on my HD

I'll try to submit an entry, but I need to install photoshop on my other computer first :pinch:

By the way, great entries so far. I especially like Spex's. Same colour choice as the one that I was working on.

Man that sucks. :( If you need any help getting the computer up and running let me know. I may be able to help you recover those files as well. :)

I'm pretty sure my HDD is fine, I think my motherboard just fried itself so I need to get it checked out. If you can help me feel free to add me to AIM or MSN.

    • But building your own.. what? You can't build anything like the Steam Machine yourself. Even trying to get close costs a good deal more. Even just the CPU cooler in their price comparison is as big as the entire Steam Machine. If you want a regular gaming PC, then by all means, build that. If you want a a small console-like PC for the living room that is good for gaming, I'm not sure what else is a better deal. In the GN review, they only mentioned a small form factor Dell, which is like twice the size and hundreds of dollars more expensive.
    • Those are some popular multiplayer games. But hardly "all". Just those that don't work on Linux currently due to specific anti-cheat implementations. I think it's also fair to point out the literally thousands of games that don't work on the PS5. And it's not locked at 1080p. That's the default, which you can change.
    • Ubuntu Livepatch arrives on Arm64 to eliminate system reboots for kernel updates by Paul Hill Canonical has just announced that its Livepatch service now supports computers with Arm64 processors. For those who are not familiar, Livepatch allows users to apply important kernel updates without any service interruption or rebooting. While home users will benefit from this, it’s even more important for critical machines that absolutely should not be going offline at all. The feature is available as part of Ubuntu Core 26 for Arm64 and Ubuntu Core 20 and onwards for AMD64. According to Canonical, this will improve the security of systems that aren’t security-maintained daily or weekly, and it helps organizations work towards Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) compliance. If you are familiar with Ubuntu, you probably know that most packages can be updated without having to restart the system. There is one big exception to this, and that’s the kernel; it typically requires you to reload the system to boot into the new kernel. With Livepatch, Canonical has done something so that you don’t need to restart to begin using the new kernel. Aside from Ubuntu Core 26, users with Arm64 chips running Ubuntu 26.04 LTS can also use Livepatch. If you want to learn more about Livepatch, check out its product page. There, you can also find a button to join Ubuntu Pro (it’s free for several home devices) so that you can enable Livepatch. By linking your computer to Ubuntu Pro, you will also extend the life of your Ubuntu install from five years to ten years. If you are running Ubuntu, let us know in the comments if you have been looking forward to this feature on your ARM-based computer. If you’ve had a compatible AMD64 machine for a while and never used this feature, let us know why in the comments!
