VideoLAN is an excellent multimedia player with it's own plugins for playing different formats, so it doesn't need any codecs to be installed. It works great for previewing partially downloaded files too as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

Changes between 0.8.5 and 0.8.6-test1:

--------------------------------

Playlist:

* Shoutcast TV listings support

Input:

* Support for RTSP authentication

* Support for adding subtitles on the fly

* Fixed MPEG-PS duration calculation

* ATSC support for DVB

* Partial support for DVR-ms recordings

* Partial support for MXF fileformat

Decoders:

* Native WMV3 / VC-1 support

* WMA Speech support (through binary codecs)

* VP5/VP6 - Flash Video support

* The True Audio Lossless codec support

* WavPack support

* Improved H.264 support (interlaced, speed improvements etc)

Video output:

* Additional OpenGL effects (cylinder, torus, sphere, ...)

* Improved libcaca support

Interfaces:

* New hotkeys for crop and zoom

* Systray support in skins (Windows only)

* Support for Apple Remote control

* Notifications using notification-daemon on Linux

* Support for snapshots from the HTTP interface

Localization:

* Add Czech

* Add Slovak

This player really is great but I still dont think it rivals the phenomenal playback found on your latest optimized build of Mplayer with the MPUI frontend.

I don't know exactly what codec was used for the AVIs I tried, but it happened too when I switch between aspect ratios and DVD subtitles/audio tracks, it just crashes. It came to the point that I could make it crash in under 20 seconds.

i have one bug to report, the earlier version when a file was corrupted or partially corrupted, the software was warning about that fact before playing it, and giving option to rebuild it or cancel.

Now it doesnt ask or warns it, but this is a test version so it was expectable
