Steve Jobs gets a grilling at UK iPhone launch

Recommended Posts

Last week we got a cryptic invitation to an event at the Apple Store on Regent Street. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to possibly see the UK iPhone, we galloped over there to get a glimpse at whatever Apple had hidden in the store. Fortunately, it was the iPhone, and better yet, Steve Jobs himself turned up to show it off. The British press were perhaps a little less respectful than their US counterparts and posed Jobs some rather tough questions.

Take a look at the video to hear what ol' Jobsy had to say about iPhone hacks, why we're not getting a 3G iPhone just yet and why he thinks it's worth paying so much for it.

"Jobsy" was getting grilled big time

Radish?

The questions weren't that though. Bit standard actually.

His "Reality Distortion Field" wasn't working on the UK press, and I think you meant to type the word "tough".

I'm not expecting anything else from the independent press. However, they were asking the exact same questions people have asked a billion times before, so from that point of view we didn't get anything new out of this.

I do find it interesting to see that Steve Jobs is actually getting annoyed by those simple questions. Plus the fact that he isn't really giving answers. Just a standard reply. The part where he froze before the unlock question was pretty funny.

I think the most uneasy moment was when the guy asked if it wasn't about money why are they using different carriers in different countries

I didn't really understand that question. Isn't it logical they choose different carriers in different countries? While T-Mobile might offer the most in Germany it isn't necessarily true for other countries, even though they do operate there.

In the Netherlands it would be a far better choice to use KPN or Vodafone rather than T-Mobile or Orange, because the latter two are much smaller players here with less coverage.

Steve Jobs is actually a very arrogant person. He's quick to get angry and hates things not going his way. You can see this when you look back on Apple's history, and the way he treats other people.

I just watched the video. I don't know about a grilling, but some very valid questions were brought up. He tried to weasel his way out of the price drop nonsense. Jobs hit an excellent point that if you keep waiting for the next product you'll never buy anything. However, two months to see a 1/3rd price drop? Sorry pal, technology isn't that fast. We would be seeing iPods every few months in that case. Six months is more understandable, but two? Please.

It did look like he was caught off guard when the unlocking question was posed. It took the word hack to get him thinking again, lol

Personally I wouldn't know as I never really seen him interact with others other than inviting another CEO/Employee to demo a product. But I have no trouble believing you.

Well Steve claimed their reason for going with O2 was because of their culture. So surely they would have similar culture in Germany? :p

This all reminds me of this:

It would be hard for him to say "Well to be perfectly honest T-Mobile is utter crap in the UK", when they still have do business with them in Germany. :p

i wonder whose going to be the carrier in Australia, despite the fact ill most like unlock it and use my prepaid, not a fan of contracts having no job and all :p

I think its going to be Hell$tra.

The unlocking bit made me laugh when he paused...I half expected him to throw a flash grenade in the crowd and run

I thought he had a stroke at that point. I felt so sorry for him. I love my PC and my Mac's. I'm no PC zealot. But I felt Jobs was not prepared for the interview and he struggled.

    • "This transition will take several years so we shouldn't bother doing it at all" is a naive take. This is completely normal for all specifications that cross-cut software, hardware and multiple industries. Look at the PCI specification for another example, consumers barely have PCI-E 5 yet PCI-SIG is working on PCI-E 8. AV2 will take multiple years to get adoption and even then, even a decade from now people will still have older hardware that doesn't support it. That's fine, because the savings still add up as newer devices add the hardware to deal with it. The goal is never to get 100% on the new spec overnight, but to gradually adopt it.
