Mac sales up over 40 percent year-over-year

Apple later this month is expected to announce fiscal first quarter revenues of nearly $10 billion for the three-month period ending December, fueled largely by the ongoing resurgence of the company's personal computer business, according to one Wall Street analyst.

In a research note issued to clients Monday, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster downplayed concerns surrounding Apple's retail channels, saying he expects the company to announce record first quarter sales of approximately 2.3 million Macs.

He noted that data from market research firm NPD for the first two months of the December quarter indicates that Mac sales growth was up some 60 percent year-over-year. Figuring conservatively, the analyst said sales of 2.3 million Macs would indicate growth of 43 percent year-over-year compared to 28 percent yearly growth during the same quarter last year.

Munster also discounted some iPod-related concerns, saying he now expects Apple to best his previous estimate of 24 million to 25 million iPods sold during the December quarter.

"While there were reports that Apple Taiwanese supplier Catcher missed its quarter due to a cancelled Apple order, we confirmed with Catcher that it did not say the miss was due to Apple," he wrote. "We now expect Apple to report iPod sales of 25 million to 26 million, which is slightly ahead of the Street expectations of 24.7 million units."

The analyst also expects iPhone unit sales of approximately 2.2 million for the quarter, which is

essentially in line with Street expectations of 2.26 million.

"The iPhone is still in startup mode, so '08 is more of a foundational year for the product than it is a growth year," he told clients. "We believe it is more important that the iPhone product line progresses in '08 (with feature improvements and price decreases) than it is for the iPhone to see significant unit growth."

Overall, Munster expects Apple to report per-share earnings of $1.73 on sales of $9.73 billion, which includes a gross margin estimate of 33 percent.

"While it is difficult to predict what the stock will do around the quarter, we believe the December results, coupled with new Macs announced at Macworld, will increase Street confidence that Apple will have sustained Mac market share gains in 08," he wrote.

They certainly went up today (+6.09). I love my Apple stock

I jumped in at $196 and it tanked right after :(

Hoping to make my money back and possibly make some cash as well (hope it goes to $200 with the Mac World buzz).

And the 2 most likely reasons for the growth?

1) Mac's now use Intel technology

2) Mac's can now run Windows.

Which means users get the best of both worlds. The rather slick UI of OSX (no one can really deny people LIKE eye candy, and OSX is nothing if not eye candy), and the ability to multi boot so you can play your games AND access the huge amount of Windows software out there.

But there's a rather large downside to the increased sales. As the number of Mac's go up; so do the chances that the virus writers will start to pay attention to OSX.

3) Don't forget the Spice ! ;)

Of course, they are alot cheaper, its a good photo album computer, simple to see albuns and hear musics...and cute too.

But not pratical ehehhehehehe

Maybe someday i will buy a Mac to replace my stereo on living room, gives great looks just standing there shuffling my music and showing pics randomly, the only 2 features e see good on these macs.

What do you mean not practical? Please tell me what you can do with a Windows PC that you can't do with a Mac. Outside of gaming, there isn't much I bet.

Every software is meant firstly to WindowsPC, you need to find the Mac version all the time. Yes you can use Windows on a Mac now, but what i have seen the Mac beauty is in their software, great for Pics/Music Albums.

The other advantages i saw on a MAC was the nice AC Power plug that is magnetic but then again if you need to use the laptop without battery, if that slips, it wont break but your work in the PC will be KAPPUT.

If you need to replace Laptop ou Desktop computaer parts, is it the easy on a MAC reaplace parts like a normal PC ou LAPTOP? I know to replace on those but i dont think on a MAC is that simple.

I only see estetic benefits on a mac, not pratical as our software and hardware reality that we live on.

How many shares you have and what did you get it at if you don't mind me asking. I got a buddy with 20 shares he got when the stock was about $40/share. Lucky ******

I only have 5 shares, but I got it when it was at $96 so while I haven't made no where near your friend, I have made a nice profit on it.

I never have to "find" a version for Mac. Most of the time the software for a Mac comes on the same disc as a Windows version.

In some cases there are companies like Microsoft that have versions of software sold separately (i.e. Office). But for the most part, software for the Mac isn't hard to find, it is just know where to look and what you're looking for. Best Buy is a great place to start considering how much software they have. Or Amazon.com.

The MagSafe connector is very hard to pull out accidentally. I'm not sure how hard technically, but you need to give it a good yank to get it out.

Replacing any laptop parts is hard in my experience. There are no real standards involved beyond memory and hard disks, everything else is custom to the manufacturer of the laptop. The same applies to Macs.

I used Windows for about 10 years until last year when I got a Mac and I'm honestly more productive on it. Each to their own though.

    • If you actually used it instead of responding like a petulant child you might be surprised. I switched from Google some time ago and have been very satisfied.
    • I am one of the first people to use the DXVK technology. In the channel below you can see some videos that I have made using this technology, including Assassin's Creed Odyssey. https://www.youtube.com/@nahum7995/videos Assassin's Creed Odyssey experienced several bugs and technical issues during its first months after release. It launched with its own fair share of funny but frustrating glitches. I ran it on DXVK 9 days after its release and I played it for many hours but didn't see a single significant bug on Linux. Assassin's Creed Odyssey is widely celebrated for pushing the franchise in bold new directions and specifically for nailing several elements better than any other title in the AC series: Player Choice & Branching Narrative, The Mercenary & Cultist System, Mythological Integration, Overpowered Combat Abilities, Open World Exploration But what I'm trying to point out is that this game wasn't quite playable on most windows systems, until a few months after its release when most of the bugs were fixed. However, on Linux it ran completely flawless from day one, although DXVK had seen little development and refinement at the time. What do you think the situation will be in 2026 now that most bugs and glitches of DXVK have been completely eliminated? This is information from Google about these situations that I am quoting. In many cases, using DXVK (a translation layer that converts DirectX 9, 10, or 11 into Vulkan) can result in more stable frame times and higher performance than native Windows rendering. This happens primarily by bypassing driver overhead and multithreading draw calls that were previously restricted to a single CPU core. Older APIs (like DirectX 9 and 11) are largely single-threaded on the CPU side. DXVK translates these calls to Vulkan, which is highly multi-threaded. This reduces CPU-bound stuttering on weaker processors. In certain cases, GPU manufacturers (especially AMD) have significantly better and more modern Vulkan drivers than they do for legacy DirectX. Vulkan gives developers—and in this case, the translation layer—closer control over how resources are held in VRAM. This can prevent micro-stutters and sudden frame drops during chaotic gameplay. Yes, certain games, particularly older DirectX 9 to 11 titles, can run with fewer crashes on DXVK than on native Windows. By intercepting DirectX draw calls and translating them into the modern, highly efficient Vulkan API, DXVK bypasses the limitations and poor driver support that cause instability in aging game engines. PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 can be easily and perfectly emulated on Linux. In fact, modern Linux emulators offer high-performance upscaling, widescreen patches, and automatic controller mapping out of the box.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 PlayStation 1/2/3 games look drastically better on Linux thanks to resolution upscaling. Furthermore, it is also a fact that you cannot play many fun games on Windows either, isn't it? - The Nintendo Switch has an extensive library of exclusive games. - PlayStation has an extensive library of exclusive games - Android has "mobile-exclusive" games, meaning they are exclusive to mobile devices (iOS and Android) and aren't available on PC or consoles. And finally, it is also the case that in the next five years there will be games that millions of people will say you absolutely must play and that they want to play this specific game that released a few days ago. However, the other side of this story is that currently, absolutely no one cares that they cannot play these upcoming games right now.

    • I found that stability back then was really down to the motherboard manufacturer. Back then i stuck with Microstar motherboards and VIA chipsets as they were ultra reliable. Most stuff was done with jumpers and left little room for user created problems 👍
