comScore: Android keeps growing, iOS passes Blackberry

Smartphone Platform Market Share

74.6 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in April 2011' date=' up 13 percent from the three-month period ending in January 2011. Google Android ranked as the top operating system with 36.4 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers, up 5.2 percentage points. Apple also gained share, capturing the #2 position with 26.0 percent of the smartphone market. RIM ranked third with 25.7 percent share, followed by Microsoft (6.7 percent) and Palm (2.6 percent).[/quote']

Android ? the biggest and almost only winner of all the platforms ? grew a whopping 1.7% during the month of April, taking the popular OS from 34.7% to 36.4% of the market. Now in second place, iOS went from 25.5% at the end of March to 26% in April, growing 0.5%. While not a huge jump, this growth was enough to finally overtake RIM?s Blackberry, which dropped a massive 1.4%, going from 27.1% to 25.7%.

In the single-digit category, Windows Phone/Mobile and WebOS weren?t able to stop the year-long bleeding. Microsoft?s platforms got even closer to death during the month of April by losing 0.8% of the market, dropping from 7.5% to 6.7%. If Microsoft is not able to quickly turn around this sinking ship, we could very well see Windows Phone/Mobile drop below 5% over the coming months.

Then what do call WebOS? A sunk ship. I think once Mango comes out Microsoft will be just fine. After all they are probable going to make more in the money in the mobile space then Google does. Manufactures have to pay royalties to Microsoft. Sales of Android tablets have been less then stellar.

I have a real problem with this report and it has to do with droid vs. ios. Android wins by the shear number of devices that run it where as iOS is only on two versions (vzw and att). Of course Android is going to win.

But that's fully Apple's fault. Though it is impressive that one smartphone can perform so well against a plethora of smartphones, many of them available for free with a contract.

I don't discount the fact that iOS only runs on Apple devices...but it's not really a fair comparison.

The point of the survey is to find out the market share of each device, not pass judgment on what is fair or not.

From a consumer/developer standpoint, it helps to go to the platform that has more popularity because it, in general, will draw the most developers.

Mango + Nokia might chnage a lot of peoples minds...

There's also been lots of news coming out in the past days from people who have went to some carrier retail store, be it AT&T or Verizon trying to get a WP device and having the sales people totally clueless about it and even trying to sell them something else when they've stated clearly what they want. With that sorta thing going on in retail no wonder WP has been selling slowly.

It's like you walking in there trying to buy one and the guy working was Flawed, you can picture how that'd turn out.

This is exactly how it played out on AT&T a year or two ago when Android finally had some decents phones being released. Most reps shoveled the iPhone if you even so much as asked about an Android phone.

I would of expected MS to do better since their last phone mishap...Kinect anyone?

I expect things to be different in a few months...always are.

Kinect? The xbox 360 gadget?

Blackberry isn't built for consumer products - it can't stand against things like iOS or Android.

Blackberry is dropping like rock they don't have an ecosystem or capital to fight Apple, or Google or even Microsoft for that matter. They only have a loyal user base. But thats not enough. It will be dead with 2 years.

PC Mag just confirmed what you were saying

i wonder if MS /Nokia plan to sell their phones unlocked say for $300, They'd do phenomenally well atleast here in India

Walked into VIP's main store here in my hometown, and asked for the device. They didn't have it at the time (they had one, but was already reserved), but asked a store in a nearby city to ship it to them. Arrived in a few hours and I got the phone. No questions asked, no pressure done.

The sales rep was a girl, very nice and friendly. :p

    • After enabling it in about:config, customize, density, compact; the toolbar/address bar gets smaller vertically. I enabled Nova, I notice the tab bar/title bar is a bit larger vertically now? Everything always becomes a waste of space.
