[24 h of Le Mans 2011] Allan McNish escapes huge shunt

Recommended Posts

Only just now saw this on the TV news: During the opening hour of the 24 h of Le Mans Allan McNish hit one of the smaller cars while lapping it and went hard into the barriers. Video:

Luckily McNish as well as spectators and photographers escaped unhurt.

**** me, the car was so close to going over the tyre barrier, then there certainly would have been some fatalities.

Surprised none of press + marshals were hurt, although had to LOL at the photographer running away from the tyre.

And then a little later in the video( after it shows the pit reactions) he is running back to get photos of the crash.

Racing cars are super safe these days, yes. But something really needs to be done about that tyre wall/barrier, or keep photographers away. That cameraman was about a foot away from a serious injury. It's great that cars are designed to disintegrate to absorb some of the energy in a crash but it also means a lot of high velocity bodywork flying all over the place and that isn't good for everyone else. The driver is paid to take the risk, the spectators aren't.
