Crap articles and moderators...

Recommended Posts

When I've published articles in the past, I have not deleted comments, even if they are negative. To me they make a good way of learning and spotting mistakes so I can (hopefully) avoid issues in the future. I'm curious though as to who is actually deleting comments, as the comments are what makes the article writing worthwhile, IMO.

To get on the point immediately, what's up with you guys lately deleting comments that suggest a news post / article is wrong / crap? We can't give feedback anymore?

EDIT: Also, why not add a dislike button too?

I totally agree. Stuff seems to get deleted without notice.

If you guys are going to "censor" threads, at least be consistent about it.

there is a button to report problems you might have with articles, comments isn't the place for them... that has been general knowledge for a long while now.... report it like it should be, if its a comment that should of been an issue report, it will get deleted by a mod

What he said. People should use common sense a little more.

I typically do not remove comments, but pointless banter (FIRST!!), intentional troll/flame, and if someone points out a spelling mistake (and doesn't use the report an issue) I will sometimes delete them after the adjustment has been made. Plenty of negative comments are left untouched, everyone is entitled to an opinion.

There is a big difference too between genuine feedback and "this is crap" or "zomg nawt news". It's easy to troll, it's difficult to be productive.

Ninja Edit:

Also the comment to view ratio is very low (typical across many sites) so one negative comment is not representative of the majority. If we bork up, and I have in the past, it is known and we get slammed from all sides. One simple comment that is derogatory doesn't mean all agree with you.

I don't care if my comments about errors get deleted when they are, but if I see a glaring grammar/spelling/other error that could have been caught with simple proofreading, I'm going to point it out in the comments and get a laugh at the author's expense. *shrug* I'll let others play copy editor, life's too short for unpaid work.

The only comments that get deleted are the obvious troll ones, people who comment in Apple articles and clearly dislike the company should imo be banned for it outright, because it serves no purpose and usually makes the person look stupid.

Oh and most of the time those comments are (quite correctly) reported by other readers too.

If theres a problem with an article, you can use the report link.

As I see no actual examples here, I'll leave it at that! :)

Lets say an article contains a picture that says something. But it is either incomplete or misinterprets the facts, just because the creator of that picture is either biased towards one thing and wants to make that thing look better, or simply doesn't care to check the correctness of what he did.

Where am I supposed to write a feedback for this? Why add the comments part in the first place, if the author can't accept negative comments?

If an article is crap, it is crap. It is not "not good enough". It is crap. ;)

(really don't give a **** about mine and others' comments being deleted, but seriously, the site right now is light years away from what it was in the past, and a lot of that has to do with the kind of articles that are being posted)

We have one full-time reporter, the rest do it for your and others benefits.

I'm glad you didn't read Neowin between 2000-2006 because you would have had a problem with every article :p That's how "unprofessional" we are.

Like I said I don't mind being deleted for it, and I don't do it all the time, but sometimes it's too easy and I just have too. As far as I can recall, the times I have done it weren't malicious trolling, at least I hope they weren't taken that way. I've been reading neowin since '02, at least, and yeah it's gotten waaaaaaaaaay better over the years as far as the quality goes, still some facepalm moments but I try to keep those to myself >.>;

Just so everyone is aware, a reported issue is treated much more seriously than a commenter making a correction in a comment. The writer (and editors) also gets notified in a few different ways so that we're sure the problem will be addressed and fixed if need be. If your goal to is to get someone to fix the issue, you should be using the issue report button. If you feel the need to point these out in the comments, you don't really have the site's interests in mind, do you?

You are so so right.

I posted this article a few days earlier on Neowin.net and the page about an error.

THEY DELETED IT!!!

This is search done in Bing. The first link is my article. IT DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE. http://www.bing.com/search?setmkt=en-US&q=neowin+news+error

I corrected them that that MS-Skype deal has not been cleared by FTC yet, and they deleted the link. It was mistake on behalf of AP.

I don't know how much longer before they delete this post too.

And you are right, I have some people reply to my comments in news section. But I can neither find their replies or my post. It has happened at least 3 times in recent memory. And I'm not a troll.

I haven't seen it happen, except yesterday, but mine wasn't a negative one. Was just me asking what "audio audio" was because of a typo in the article. So easy to see why they removed it :p

We don't want to see discussions on typos as that takes away from the point of the article. There is a report button that can be used to tell us of mistakes.

We would like our discussions to be as on-topic as possible.

NP :p I appreciate the response but we do have a report a problem with this article link.

We don't want to see forum threads that report errors on the mainpage. That just bloats out the site unnecessarily.

I moved your thread to a location where the Newsies could read and implement any required changed.

Technically, it does still exist. You just don't have the permissions to see it. It wasn't, however, deleted.

If you want to be helpful, it would be nice to establish a working relationship first.

I'd be more inclined to respond to a person who uses the reported issues link properly than deal with someone who sends me an essay via email explaining why I should go back to high school and take remedial English.

I'm trying to ignore the irony of you making a grammatical error in this thread after saying what you said..... but I just can't. :)

Noooo! The second 'too'! Curse you, homophones! Curse you!!! My inner grammar and spelling Nazi failed me this day.

People who go to that length need help and take it far too seriously. >.> Let me guess. That's actually happened?

Hit the "report" button. This sends it to us. That way, it doesn't pointlessly spam the comments with "ZOMG YOU GOT IT WRONG?!!11!" and we can fix it quickly.

I suspect if you explained why you thought the article was "crap" it would be more helpful, however, most just say "this is crap" and refuse to explain why. I welcome constructive criticism on things I write, but it has to be for a reason, not just because you think its crap. Sometimes news joints get stuff wrong. Look at Engadget, they get things wrong all the time. It's not the end of the world. We correct, we move on.

    • Sorry to be that guy but, Given Trump won again even after a failed first term it would appear attacking the other side is how to gain Government in America. Voters when it came down to it didn't give a s**t about those Democratic achievements and voted for Trump over an intelligent, qualified mixed race woman. We need to face up to this uncomfortable reality. There are more Americacan voters who support racism and christian bigotry along with defending and supporting pedophilia, adjudicated rapists, multiple time convicted felons etc than those who don't. Btw, that is how the world sees America now. Not that Trump voters care as they attempt to cocoon themselves in a white supremacy bubble.
    • That's not clickbait. Clickbait is headlines like, "You'll never guess what this person looks like now" for example. For goodness sake, take a look around the internet if you think this is clickbait. How do sites survive if people don't click through to articles? How many people in all honesty would have clicked this if it had your suggested headline? You and those upvoting your post won't be happy until the web is a couple of hundred websites all behind a paywall.
