Prince Won't Record Another Album

Pop superstar Prince is refusing to record another album because he is so disappointed with the online music industry.

The Purple Rain hitmaker released his last record, 20ten, last year (10) as part of an innovative scheme which saw him give away free copies with a British newspaper.

Prince insisted the deal was done to circumvent internet piracy and would cause him "no stress", but the musician is adamant he won't be releasing any more new material due to ongoing problems with illegal downloads.

He tells Britain's The Guardian, "The industry changed. We made money (online) before piracy was real crazy. Nobody's making money now except phone companies, Apple and Google. I'm supposed to go to the White House to talk about copyright protection. It's like the gold rush out there. Or a carjacking. There's no boundaries. I've been in meetings and they'll tell you, 'Prince, you don't understand, it's dog-eat-dog out there'. So I'll just hold off on recording."

The singer was the first major artist to release a whole album, 1997's Crystal Ball, exclusively online, but he admits he doesn't actually like music in digital form.

He adds, "I personally can't stand digital music. You're getting sound in bits. It affects a different place in your brain. When you play it back, you can't feel anything. We're analogue people, not digital."

Prince will play Heineken Open'er Festival next weekend.

Prince is correct, digital will never compare to tape, it will come very close but it will always be missing something.

Agreed.

The bottom line is with a copy of Pro Tools, you can make the music flawless, and music is not meant to be flawless, it takes the soul out of it.

The new Foo Fighters album is a good example of this.

For certain music where it was born of the digital age, well it obviously does not really affect it, but for music that involves instruments, all digital takes something away. No doubt at all in my mind about this fact.

He adds, "I personally can't stand digital music. You're getting sound in bits. It affects a different place in your brain. When you play it back, you can't feel anything. We're analogue people, not digital."

I wonder if anyone has told this clown that CDs are digital and that he's been selling his music on that format for decades.

Actually most of his stuff that came out on CD was in all likelihood analogue, analogue, digital [AAD]

Also it depends on how the artist would like his/her music to sound! That studios can produce music that's "pure" is one thing, but not necessarily a must or a given!

A perfect example now days of studio quality CD's being produced via [A+ or A] Soundboard Recordings at live shows, that have plenty of soul and are sold directly after the show!

The sound quality is noted by letters. A+ is a perfect recording (like an official live release). "A" is excellent, "A-" is good or very good. "B+" is okay or good. "B", "B-" and "C"....

"I'll Never Be Another Fool", Prince sings, "I'll never open my legs, again, to a man, who's insecure/I'll never open my legs again, unless, I'm really sure"

So what are you implying, that he's a homo?

Umm.. close but no, there was NO legal way to get music online until Piracy proved that it was a market they needed to get into.. And even then the record labels have fought the will of the masses at every turn..

Plus after hearing about him in one of the Evening with Kevin Smith segments, I say it's no loss.. Plus he's been past his prime for a while now.

I agree with him on the state of today's music. To me most of the modern music lacks soul. It is all rhythm and no blues. It doesn't speak to my heart except for rare cases. The reason it's like that is the greedy record companies and the RIAA are strictly in it for the money. They basically sell sex and a beat in a nice package. The music is secondary.

Prince is correct, digital will never compare to tape, it will come very close but it will always be missing something.

The only thing missing is the analog noise of the needle vibrating over plastic. Some old people got used to that inherent corruption and call it "warmth" and other euphemisms.

A properly master digital recording is the truest representation of the artist's performance and intention there is, re: no one listens to playback in the booth off of "vinyl".

Prince is a VERY talented performer in many ways, but he's clearly a techno-illiterate.

He should do what Radiohead has done. They made more money in one digital album release than the MAFIAA had paid them for their entire body of prior work...combined.

    • If you don't care to read what I said, then you prove my point. Maybe written media is beyond your attention span. Titles are not summaries my friend.
    • Nobody asked... in fact, I said "I don't care about political leanings"
    • TLDR. Here is a far better title (just a basic example): Windows 11 26H2 to allow disabling Web search results
    • Restore will get my vote, only if to see if things are any different, doubt it though but Labour and Conservatives too out of touch and same thing over and over and over…, Lib Dem who?
    • There is nothing wrong with this title. You have completely missed the plot when it comes to "clickbait." The issue was never that a title tries to entice you to click, that is how titles have worked for over 100 years. The issue is when the title subverts expectations, getting you to click expecting something that isn't there. The classic clickbait example is "Boyfriend caught cheating, what happens next will shock you," then what happened next is the girlfriend was upset...which is probably the least shocking outcome imaginable. If sounds like what you want is for the titles to be a collection of 10-word summaries that you can skim, get the just of the story, and only click if you want more details. That is not, never has been, and never will be what titles are. You can go all the way back to print newspapers during the great depression and see the same thing. The newspaper was locked in a vending machine, all you can see is the headline, you choose to put in 5¢ to buy the paper and read the rest if you want. Those headlines were written in a way to sell the paper, not just to provide a summery. Here are two actual headlines from that time, "Wall Street Lays an Egg," or "Stocks Hit Bottom?" Maybe you'd say something like "it was wrong then and it's still wrong now." Okay, fine opinion to have, but it isn't like Neowin is doing something unjurnalistic, they are just following the age-old standards for written media.
