Note that Xcode 2.5 could be used on Tiger and Leopard, as well as side by side with 3.0.

(I could not find a better source, but there's many reports of it). Could not find versions earlier than Xcode 3.2 on ADC. I'm glad I downloaded the final versions of Xcode for Panther, Tiger, Leopard a few weeks ago . :o

Very good point. I thought there was something a little off about Rudy's claim about there never being any other case of more than one major version of Xcode working on a single release of OS X. I'm thinking that some of the betas were that way too, but can't find any proof one way or the other.

edit: actually there is a list in the sidebar of the Wikipedia article on Xcode: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xcode

Mac OS X v10.3 (Version 1.x)

Mac OS X v10.4 (Version 2.x)

Mac OS X v10.5 (Versions 2.5, 3.0, 3.1)

Mac OS X v10.6 (Versions 3.2, 4.x)

Mac OS X v10.7 (Versions 4.1, 4.2)

While 10.5 supported 2.5 it actually came bundle with 3.0

And 3.2.6 or whatever the newest 3.2 is can run on 10.7 with a little coaxing.

I think "works with" should be replaced with "is supported with" in this conversation.

They're charging for a Snow Leopard version (and they still are as far as I know), as I said before they've never had an OSX release have more than one major Xcode release before so charging $5 is like an upgrade fee (Xcode 3.2 was still free)

Xcode is included on the Snow Leopard DL DVD (both the upgrade version from Apple retailers and the Store and the install DL DVD included with Macs that came preloaded with it). If installed via either, Xcode updates will be available via Software Update - just like all other Apple software updates.

Quirk - When installing Xcode 4.1, the installer may alert you that iTunes needs to be closed. The issue isn't iTunes itself, but the iTunesHelper process; kill it via /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor. Once that is done, the installer completes normally.
