Best Linux AntiVirus Software..?

Recommended Posts

Its hard to go into the specifics but you cant get virus' in linux, therefore eliminating the need for an anti-virus prog :)

 Since when is Linux not vulnerable to virusses? Maybe they aren't circulating as much as win or other virusses. Maybe somebody should contact the people writing virusses for Linux and tell them that they are wasting their time because Linux is imune to virusses and doesn't need any form of virusscanner

Sophos works with Linux

Platforms supported

Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

Windows 95/98/Me

Unix/Linux

Mac OS 8.1 or greater

DOS/Windows 3.1x

Sophos is an excellent product, I specced it out for my workplace.

Seriously, that's bluddey great..!

When you say use "su as absolute paths", are you referring to this:

- Log in using account (other than root)

- Go to Terminal

- Type "su", then password

- Install program

So if I were in root and surfing the net (bad move, just like Administrator on Windows) then I can get viruses, but an account other than root does not get viruses...because...the main system folders are locked out..?

Does this also mean that there is little to no point in have a Firewall..? (I'm keeping my hardware firewall, just in case).

Have I got this right, because I only started using Linux yesterday..?

Email Viruses

Won't I get any email viruses then (I mean, I know I'll get them - but they can't affect my system or address book can they?)

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to be safe.

There is always a point to having a firewall. Any user can get virii, it's just they can't affect the system unless you log on as root. When I say absolute paths, i mean instead of running for example "ifconfig", you would execute "/sbin/ifconfig", just incase your paths have been tampered with, and you don't run the desired application.

E-mail viruses normally exploit holes in Outlook and Outlook Express, or they run as a script such as VB or ActiveX. If you get an e-mail one of these attached in Linux, it won't do anything.

If you think of the 10 worse viruses ever, probably 7 have been Outlook Express holes

    • There is a lot of reasons not to use Edge but faster fixes and security updates is not one of them.
    • Can't reproduce. I installed Edge, went to neowin.net > accepted the cookie consent > used menu to go to forums, everything loads and I can browse around the forums. If you can't interact with the dialog on the forums for some reason, go to the main site and accept the cookie consent there? It is true that the site will not function properly until the cookie consent is accepted or rejected,. it's a legal requirement and I also know that certain VPN/ad blockers block it, which is a user related issue and not a neowin.net problem.   This is not our cookie consent dialog. Gotta love browser hijacking... /s Edit: this may be what Californians see, I will confirm with our consent provider.
