Resistance 3 reviews roll in....

IGN 9/10 - http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/119/1191975p1.html (video review)

Resistance 3 offers the same polished experience as the last two games in the series, only this time the action is more focused and tightly structured. Insomniac clearly wanted to make this game a more harrowing and personal experience, and by focusing its attention on a smaller, more personal story within the invasion, it has succeeded without question. While the big military operations have been replaced by more intimate battles, the sense of scale is as intimidating as ever. This is a surprisingly emotional cinematic roller-coaster of a campaign that never lets up.

Likewise, multiplayer in the game remains of the same high caliber as before. The number of players in its multiplayer modes may have been reduced, but fans should rest assured that the quality of the experience remains first-class. Resistance 3 is a must-buy for PS3 shooter fans.

There's a greater feeling of depth, life and narrative to the tale and the gunplay is satisfying even if we do have to reserve some criticism for the AI, which still shows itself to be rough around the edges at times.

Insomniac isn't going to turn over the FPS genre this year by any stretch of the imagination - this is still the classic FPS formula with more polish and playability. Regardless, the studio has managed to increase the big blockbuster moments that slap your face for attention and tend to the finer details that will keep you engaged throughout all the bits in-between.

It might be too late for some players, but with the final segment of its trilogy Resistance has finally met its promise. It's still big men firing big guns at big enemies - but now there's a big chunk of depth below its surface, too.

Joystiq 4.5/5 - http://www.joystiq.c...ever-outgunned/

In the opening moments of Resistance 3, you're informed of a fairly unfortunate development that dictates the tone of the campaign which follows: In the war for the fate of humanity, the home team has lost. Despite your valiant efforts during the series' first two installments (or perhaps, troublingly, because of them), the invading Chimera have taken over large swaths of our mid-20th Century Earth, pushing humanity ? our protagonist included ? deep underground.

No matter how powerful leading hero Joseph Capelli and his bottomless knapsack of devastating ordinances become, that feeling of defeat never quite dissipates. Whether you're being overrun by a flood of savage troops or watching your traveling companions be butchered by an agent of insensate evil, you can't help but feel like you're losing ground; even though the passage of chapters indicates that you're moving forward.

Put simply, Resistance 3 exchanges the genre's all-too-familiar bravado for a pervasive and relentless air of desperation. It's a subtle substitution, but it's singlehandedly responsible for making Resistance 3 one of the most compelling shooters I've ever played.

First excellent surprise of this end of year, Resistance 3 finally manages to become a PS3 exclusive worthy of its counterparts. Even though it is less lengthy than the previous episode's, the campaign mode is, by far, better paced, more spectacular and more exciting to play. It is also built on a crescendo that takes the player on an impressive roller-coaster ride. Mutliplayer and co-op add even more play time to the equation if the single player experience is not enough for you. Truth be told, I haven't had such a blast with a first person shooter in a long while, which is why I strongly advise you to give it a try. After all, Resistance 3 has no trouble besting Killzone 3 and other references of the genre in many departments.

Eurogamer 8/10 - http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-09-05-resistance-3-review

Resistance 3 gets almost everything right, yet never quite ascends to greatness. Both single- and multiplayer urges are given equal attention, and all the boxes you'd expect a modern FPS to tick are dutifully filled in. That sense of obligation is, perhaps, the problem. First-person shooter design has reached an evolutionary ceiling and desperately needs some mutant DNA to push it onwards and upwards. Resistance 3 could have provided that genetic jolt; but Insomniac has chosen to look back to how we used to play rather than grapple with how we could play in the future. As understandable as it is, that cautious approach results in a game that is extremely enjoyable, but never as imaginative as you want it to be.

G4TV 5/5 - http://www.g4tv.com/games/ps3/64424/resistance-3/review

Resistance 3 provides a cohesive and polished triple-a shooter experience. What is most exciting is that Insomniac has decided to be itself. It always felt like they were trying to compete with the big boys by copying them, and that is an unwinnable war. It was Insomniac?s answer to Halo or Call of Duty, rather than Insomniac?s take on the shooter. Resistance 3 is finally confident enough to be itself - and in that way it is something brutal, something whimsical, and ultimately, something special.

this is definitely an incredible game and the best in the series so far. looks amazing and the guys that did the motion capture for the chimera this time around really make me laugh, they made it seem so realistic. a lot more organic than before. i love this game. but strange, ever since i started playing it, my PSN trophy card (exophase) won't update...i did start playing it a little early, the store called so i picked it up over the weekend.

Very much looking forward to playing it, will be doing so as soon as I get home today from work, will also see how it looks in 3D no doubt.

Also, Happy Birthday AB. (Y)

Is single player anything like multi player? I tried the multi player beta and it was pretty awful...

Since most games are this way, I see no reason why this game would be different, so the controls will be the same and that is about it. Pacing, graphics, etc., all will be much different since it is a SP game. With that said, I actually did not mind the beta at all and thought it was pretty decent minus a few performance issues which I would hope they have sorted out by now since it is launch day.

They announced when the BETA was finished that those fixes would be added to a launch day patch, so it should be hardly unexpected at this point.

With GoW Origins coming out this month I may have to pass on this one until christmas, though I'm still looking forward to it (if my friends picks it up soon I'll borrow it from him if I get a chance to play it before next year starts).

my PSN trophy card (exophase) won't update..

Have you tried refreshing your PSN ID card on the actual PS site? Sometimes that requires an update before it syncs with other websites.

Didn't this game just got release today, and they already have 656 MB patch already. WTF!!!

Yep I noticed that as well, but as Boxter pointed out above, I actually view it as a good thing, means they are actually fixing things in the game.

I checked it out ever so briefly when I got home. like maybe 20 minutes, and I was messing around with the 3D trying different settings. About to play a good 2 hours now, my wife is letting me have the TV for the night, so will post my initial impressions more than likely tomorrow morning when I get into work and I am doing my normal get into work mode by posting on Neowin first routine.

First game in a long time I am tempted to check out some MP before playing SP, as posted above I actually liked the beta, think I was the only person , but going to stick to all SP tonight.

Definitely think this is the best Resistance SP to date. That is not saying a whole lot though, as the first two were decent games, but not great games by any means. But this is definitely the tightest of the 3 in all regards. I played for almost 2 hours, and it is already the best SP campaign of the resistance series. It is still very old school in it's overall approach though, so if people were not fans of the first 2 games at all, I do not necessarily see this game winning them over.

3D is for the most part is cool. At times it is a bit much, meaning there are times were the action is so frantic, the 3D is a little much to take in. It never felt disorienting, but it was a lot to take in visually and came close to being disorienting. There have been more times where the 3D is done really well and adds to the immersion though. So overall I think the times it is done well is worth it, but we will see.

One thing about the 3D, and about the game overall, is there are a decent amount of jaggies on screen. It is not because of the 3D, I turned it off, and same amount of jaggies. Thing is the jaggies are more noticeable when one is viewing the game in 3D.

Again though, there have been some times when the 3D is stellar. So not sure how I am going to proceed. Think it is just going to depend on my mood. Slightly annoying thing about the 3D is it has to be enabled from the main menu, so if I want to turn it on and off, have to quit the campaign, enable it, vice versa. That is a slight annoyance.

3D out of the way, the game is a good, solid, FPS, and I love the fact they decided to go with the weapon wheel.

Was a toss between this and dead island. A friend though already picked up Dead Island, so I decided to get that for the coop. Though I really want this... and all the reviews aren't helping me be pleased by skipping out on it :p

Buuut, at least Dead Island is very cool.

I actually went to go check out Dead Island on the PC real quick, I got it for $32 on preorder about a month back, and my not having the best experiences with PC gaming continues. Started the game, and it was just a black screen, nothing else. After googling the issue, finally found out for people who have dual monitors, have to disable one of your monitors, and then the game works. Sure enough that worked for me, but when I got it running, SLi was not working, so the game was kind of running not so well. So yeah, waiting for a patch already. Ahhhh, the joys of PC gaming. I truly never have encountered the have to disable second monitor to get a game working though. That is just **** poor IMO.

So I was pretty much going to do so already, but now I will definitely stick to playing Resistance 3 on the PS3, and I will come back to Dead Island once they have patched it a few times. I am really looking forward to checking it out though, but truth is I only really have time for one or the other, so not a huge deal I cannot play Dead Island right now. I will get to it eventually.

GI didn't really seem to dig it:

Gmae Informer - Resistance 3 review

GI Rating 7.00

  • Concept:Take players on a lackluster cross-country war against the Chimera as new protagonist Joe Capelli
  • Graphics:Bland environments that don?t capture the atmosphere of the first game or the scale of Resistance 2?s larger battles
  • Sound:Guns don?t feel like they have much weight, and the soundtrack is forgettable
  • Playability:Controlling Joe is never much of an issue, but getting enemy AI to acknowledge your existence can be troublesome
  • Entertainment:If this is the final Resistance game, the franchise is certainly going out with a whimper
  • Replay:Moderate

boxster - thanks, but it's just exophase that's not updating. i generated a new one from yourgamercards and it's current.

Larry - is your exophase card up to date?

as for the game, all those people who've been asking for a return to old school shooters need to pick this up. no regenerating health, 12 weapons at the same time...it might as well be Doom. with really good graphics and a decent story. Capelli is definitely a more likable character than Hale. i have to hand it to Insomniac, the improvement in visuals and sound between each installment in the series has been huge. unlike some other series. i know it's not the cool thing to be talking about graphics because you young people are so spoiled you don't know a good thing, but this has to be said!

glad you like the 3D Larry, but even in 2D this game is awesome. it deserves all the praise it's been getting and more.

EDIT: actually the exophase trophy count is also current...just the game icons seem to refuse to update.

Yep, I think it is up to date, not sure as I do not really follow my trophies all that much, but if it does not count PSN games, GT5 is the last game I played before R3.

And actually I am not sure if I like the 3D or not. I like it in some parts

(like the hurricane scene by the church, very cool with everything flying around, etc.)

, dislike it on others

(like the boat ride)

, and really like it in a few

(towards the beginning when running towards town and rockets and all around mayhem going on, really effective)

. Way more likes than dislikes though, so may stick with it, but not 100% sure.

And yeah, I think every FPS known to man should use the weapon wheel. The whole 2 weapons thing at a time has got to go.

Do you plan on checking out the MP? I played the beta and I actually really liked it, am itching to check it out but I try to beat SP first (I am also going on vacation on Saturday, so feel why get into it if I will not have a chance to play for over a week anyway). Regardless, add me on PSN if you have not already, DLDirtyLarry

3D is way better today for some reason. Not even kidding. Actually is a pretty weird phenomenon. I did just get the sniper, and the level you get it on is pretty open and multi-leveled, so really was looking good on this particular level. Really liking the game though. Looking forward to hopping on MP, which is a rarity for me these days.

Is the game as atmospheric as I may be led to believe online? I hope so as the last FPS game I completed was probably HL2 due to IMO the majority now a days lacking good atmosphere, let alone story

Well I completed Bioshock 2 not long ago, but Bioshock is my kind of FPS game.

It's fairly atmospheric. I would not say it is Bioshock or Half Life atmospheric though. Those are two of my favorites as well, and nope, the game does not really come close to those games.

sure thing Larry, will add you and yes, will def get into the MP in this, but you're right, FPS games tend to spoil the SP with the MP maps so prob better to finish the story first...but the MP looks awesome from what i've seen, and a couple people gave me really good feedback on it. it seems it's like COD more than ever online, so take that as you will. and enjoy your vacation, safe travels!

Audio - this is a very atmospheric game, i like the world building and the characters. it's miles more impressive than the first two. but yeah, not Scotland this time heh heh.

as for the updating of the trophy card, yeah it was just an exophase thing, it's fine now.
