Santa Fe man claims to be missing boy

SANTA FE (KRQE) - More than 11 years after a Santa Fe boy disappeared, a young man claims he is Robbie Romero, police are reporting.

Santa Fe police report receiving a tip this week about a man claiming to be the boy who disappeared in June 2000 at age 7. Detectives have talked to the man but said his claim needed to be checked out.

The missing boy?s mother, Evelyn Romero, said the young man paid her a visit Wednesday night.

She said some friends of her other son, Ricky, had meet the boy in December. Those friends thought the boy who went by the name ?Robert Romero? looked like Robbie.

He told them he didn?t remember much of his childhood and that?s what made them think maybe it was the missing boy.

Romero said those friends brought the teen to her house. When she saw him at the door, Romero said, "I just stared at him." She added that she thought he looked like her son.

Romero said the young man had the same mannerisms and skinny build and skinny face, and he ?still? had the big ears.

Initial reports in 2000 indicated Romero disappeared when he was walking between his home and a friend's house. Police later questioned that story saying Romero may have been seen last at his own home.

Why would him not remembering his childhood make them think he was the missing child?

1) his name and 2) the other son's friends said they thought it might be him... Two convincing corroborations combined with a missing piece in your mind, could easily come to that conclusion, at least as a possibility. If a kid goes missing, there's no telling what they might do to him, to make him lose the memory. Makes sense to me anyway.

Yeah, you're right. There probably aren't too many Robert(robbie) Romeros out there. And the other sons friends thought it might be him? Sorry, that doesn't make any convincing corroborations of anything.
