Looks like Classic Shell (http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/) works on Windows 8 Developer Preview.

I have both the Classic Start Menu from Classic Shell and Metro running at the same time. In Classic Start Menu's Settings dialog, I selected the option to show all settings and then I associated my middle mouse button with the Windows traditional start menu when clicking the start button (which in this case is the metro UI) and the left mouse button with the Classic Start Menu. It's awesome!! :D :D

I can never go back to metro accidentally when I intend to bring the normal start menu and I go back to metro at will by pressing the Windows key or middle clicking the start button! All of a sudden, I like Windows 8 and I am back in action and have full control! I use Classic Shell on some Windows 7 PCs but on Windows 7 I associate it with the middle mouse button.

Thanks, it's a good app. Just to add: it adds the XP start menu! -----really classic.

I set start to open up Metro, because it's what should happen in win8, and winlogo to bring up the classic start menu.

It's just a skin! You can have a single column start menu (Windows 2000 and below) or a two column start menu which is XP and above but that's not all. You can also add a search box on the bottom pretty much like Vista/7. It's awesome. You can even make the actual appearance look like XP Luna so you have white and blue or you can make it look like glass/aero and there are other themes too. This little project is an absolutely cool!

For people who just can't handle change.

Yes correct because every change is better, right? Just because something is newer it doesn't mean it's better for the user. This classic shell is designed for power users without a doubt.

I guess we are lucky that the "click events" of the Windows Start Menu can be overridden. I am just afraid MS might consider disabling this programming hack in order to force us to go Metro and limit flexibility but if they do that, Windows 7 will be the last version of Windows for me and future upgrades will be non-Windows.

You shouldn't be using computers if you can't handle progress. They aren't like toasters or microwaves which largely remain the same year after year!

How can you call yourself a power user if you are still using the old Start menu? It's clunky and inefficient.

For people who just can't handle change that are smart and intelligent, have a clue and know what they want.

:D

Oh puulllleeeaaaasee, seriously, do you seriously think the Metro UI is more productive than the Start Menu on a desktop PC?

The "new" way of doing things is easily 10x more clunky and 10x less efficient.

Yes, it is. The start screen will (depending on apps) give me more information about an application before entering an application. That alone is more "productive". Weather app, I can see what the weather is, without opening it. A weather app on the old Start MENU (the thing it is replacing) I would have to open the application.

not when it takes over your entire screen and you can only run 2 apps at once via the metro UI... that's so productive. tablet sure, desktop, **** no.

So you like it because it uses more resources and is inefficient?

You can run more than two applications at a time. Are you talking about having two applications visible on the screen at a time?

    • I think you meant the "ntfs3" driver, but yes there have been a lot of fixes for it in this release and previous releases, not 100% sure if the issue you mentioned is fixed though. In any case, the new "ntfs" driver in 7.1 doesn't have that issue (at least, no reports of such have come thru), but your kernel needs to explicitly enable support for the new driver first (like how CachyOS kernel has it), and you need to edit your mount points in /etc/fstab to use "ntfs" instead of the other drivers.
    • Epic Games says Unreal Engine 6 will help developers "build content faster" using AI models by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Epic Games is rolling out the latest major update to Unreal Engine 5 today, and at the same time, the company also dropped some information on the next-generation version of the product, Unreal Engine 6. This was already revealed a few weeks ago alongside the new Rocket League upgrade reveal. The company says it is combining the features of Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor for Fortnite to create this new version of its popular media creation tool. On top of creating entire games, the new engine will also focus on letting developers operate large-scale live service titles more easily, whether by shipping content into their own ecosystems or into Fortnite. The use of large language models is also mentioned here, with Epic saying it will be a core part of the engine. "We see LLMs, generative AI models, and tools like Claude and Codex playing a central role in helping you build content faster while maintaining the creative control you need," adds the company. Here is the rundown of what's new about version 6 of Unreal Engine: With all these changes to the programming model, portability upgrades, and generative AI integration, Epic says the new version of the engine will "change a lot about how games are made." The company aims to ship Unreal Engine 6 into early access in late 2027, with a full release planned for 12-18 months later. Epic Games also dropped a lengthy blog post about the new Unreal Engine 5.8 update for game developers over here. The release is focused on delivering better performance, customization, and streamlined workflows for development teams. This will be the final major update for this version of the engine before Epic switches to focus fully on Unreal Engine 6's early access launch.
    • Watch Louis Rossmann's recent experience on YouTube about trying to get a warranty replacement from Samsung. It's crazy.
    • That is the thing, how many of these people don't realise they are using AI? If they use Google Search they have no choice but to use AI. So yes, maybe half of American adults do use and I expect a lot of Uk adults do to, but I bet most of them don't realise it. Myself, i avoid the rubbish.
    • They use FREE AI. They aren't paying for this meme-generating slopware...
