Dinggus
Currently out of the states for awhile, and I updated to iOS 5 thinking I'd be fine since I've updated a few 4.x firmwares, never had to activate my iPhone after restoring. How can I bypass activating my iPhone 3GS with no service?
DigitalE
There are two ways you can do this: 1. Jailbreak and "hacktivate" it. The Dev-Team blog is a great place to start. 2. Find a legit AT&T SIM card (maybe ask a friend?) and pop it in just to activate the phone.

Redsn0w wasn't working, it stayed at "exploiting with limera1n", so I ended up using a buddies PC and used sn0wbreeze, hacktivated. I have an AT&T SIM, but out of the country so have no service, can't activate that way. So, phone is working, only issue now is iMessage won't stay on. I go to turn it on and it switches back to off instantly.
