Spammed to death since this new board upgrade ...

Recommended Posts

Per title, since this latexst board update I am spammed to death by notification emails on neowin. The old system did the same when it was upgraded. Basically I had the option set as follow topics when replying with notification delayed (I think that is what it was) so that I only got one notification until I logged in again.

Sadly now there is dozens of options on the notifications and as such I am getting either nothing if I turn the options off or bombarded to death (especially in the BF3 thread) whenever a reply is made. If I leave the autofollow ticked and untick all the email options I get nothing, If I leave the autofollow unticked I get nothing, if I tick the email options I get spammed. It's highly annoying and yet another reason I abhor the new update :(

WTF do I have to do so that I just get one notification per topic like the old board?

Please change the notification options to "Notification List" which puts the notifications in the top menu instead of sending an email for every notification.

I did reset this for everyone, and didn't set any auto mail options (because I believe this must be an opt in for members, rather than decided by us).

I did a test on the email "digest" option and it appears to send an email per topic, rather than consolidating them!

It looks like you have mail switched on, for almost everything!

Edit: Also change the top option to "immediate" or the notifications will only be put in the top menu when you go offline.

I just want to have it the old way where I got an email immediately someone replied to a topic and no further emails were received until I visited the thread/topic.

So should I change Auto Follow to Immediate or Digest? Also can you tell me exactly what to tick/untick to get the notifications as above?

Having all of those options available is just overkill, I had to tick them all as without ticking them I would get no notifications at all. As I say whilst things are slowly getting better with this update, it seems to be "lets make a change for changes sake", I have been with Neowin since the very beginning and its only that last two updates that have caused headaches :(

[edit]

Changing from email to notification list will just display in the top of the forums? That is useless to me as I only visit them when a reply is made to a topic then I browse around, I mainly just visit the main page for news etc

[/edit]

I've never used the notifications to email me, so I can't really help you there. Maybe it's a case of trial and error to see if it works out?

Additionally, we don't change for change sake.. it's for security and many other fixes and improvements (specifically search) over older versions.

The option you want is called 'Delayed Email Notification'. It's still there but it's under a different name: 'Offline'. Unfortunately, it doesn't work as it should. There's a bug with versions of IP.Board older than 3.2.3 where multiple emails are sent instead of just one. Take a look at this post made by an IPS staff member on the IPS community board.

Right so I have it as offline already but its due to a bug I am getting spammed to death? What a great update! Now I suppose I will have to wait until next year for the fix that is mentioned but not released to be out and then for another update to neowin? After just trawling through over 130 mails just for the BF3 thread, it may be easier just to flag neowin as spam and not bother coming here anymore :(

As far as I'm aware, 3.2.3 is a "maintenance release" because it fixes bugs instead of adding new features. It isn't anything major like IPB 3.2. so expect us to upgrade to it soon (see Redmak's post). For now, I'd suggest disabling email notifications and simply coming back from time to time. That's how I do it, anyway.

It has now gone to the other extreme, since the mentioned update I have had no notifications for any subscribed threads whatsoever :( Even going into the threads and resubscribing does nothing :(

I'm having the same issue. I always got an Immediate Email when someone replied ~ until I visited the thread in the email. This is how it was for years, this is how I like it.

Now Immediate sends an Email for every comment. Tried "offline" but that doesn't send me any emails.

It would be a lot easier for me to blame @Neobond but if it's IP.Board fault i'll just have to suck it up ;)

That's how the immediate email notification is supposed to work. The option you want is "offline" (previously known as "delayed"). You won't get an email notification if a reply is made in a followed topic when you're online.

That's really strange. Every other forum I'm reading on the net is set to immediate emails and it works as instantly send an email when there's a new reply but only for the first unread reply. Maybe it's different on IPB ? idk. I'll try offline again and report back.

Holy thread revival!

I'm still struggling with this. For "Offline" I don't get notifications at all while I'm online and surfing the site. So if I opened a new thread in the games forum and now I'm reading something in the news forum I won't be notified when someone replied the games thread. Really annoying.

That isn't our fault! Take 5 minutes to go through and enable/disable exactly what you want https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=core&area=notifications for example my notifications are set to inline only, which is the notifications list at the top right of the site next to search, you probably have that disabled when you're "online" as well.

People are too quick to assume that we're at fault even though 100's of others don't seem to have the issue you're having.

That's not true. The first thing I always assume is that i'm an idiot and probably doing something wrong.

I still didn't understand your explanation to my problem.

When I reply a thread I want to get only one notification \ email until I visit the thread again.

To my understanding the only line in the notification settings that responsible for this is

"v Auto follow topics I reply to. Notification frequency:"

With "Immediate" I can get 30 notifications for 30 replies from X thread regardless if I visit the thread.

With "Offline" I will get 1 Email \ Notification for 30 replies from X thread IF I'm Offline (Completely disconnected from neowin) until I'll visit the thread (that will trigger the notifications for this thread again) .

If I'm online but reading some other thread I won't be notified for a new reply on the X thread

*Of course blaming anyone from neowin was a joke :), I'm just trying to figure out how to make it work for me like it used to.

I just checked 6 more forum boards I'm using (just to make sure) and in all of them the default thread subscription mode I'm using is set to instant or Immediate and all of them acts like it should. One notification per thread until thread is visited.

I'm pretty sure there's a bug in the Immediate Option on Neowin..It used to work until a month ago or so.

It have to be a bug..where's the logic of getting 50 notification for one thread...

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • A coalition of publishers sued OpenAI and Microsoft over scraping content without consent by Hamid Ganji Image via Depositphotos.com AI companies often rely on readily available internet content to train their chatbots and provide users with instant answers. This method of AI training is fast and relatively inexpensive, but using a website’s content without permission or compensation is not something publishers like to see, and this is exactly why Microsoft and OpenAI are now being sued. As reported by Bloomberg, a group of publishers that collectively own nearly 400 newspapers has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. The coalition argues that the two companies scraped their content to build AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot without paying any compensation. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, argues that while AI products have generated billions of dollars in market value using publishers’ work, none of that value has been shared with the publishers. The plaintiffs are seeking statutory damages and injunctive relief for alleged copyright infringement and violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. “Defendants systematically and secretly crawled the Publishers’ websites—including content behind paywalls and other access restrictions—and copied the Publishers’ articles, stories, and other original works onto their own servers without authorization,” the complaint states. The publishers also described the AI boom as a “death knell for local journalism” if AI companies that scrape content for free are not held accountable. Former New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin and his law firm, Platkin LLP, are representing the publishers. “Our models empower innovation, are trained on publicly available data, and are grounded in fair use,” OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri told Bloomberg. This is not the first lawsuit involving the unauthorized use of publishers’ content by AI firms, but it is one of the largest coalitions ever formed against the free use of content by AI chatbots. In 2024, OpenAI and Microsoft also faced a similar lawsuit from eight newspapers that claimed AI products were benefiting from their content without permission.
    • Rufus alternative Ventoy now supports Windows 11's mandatory update, fixes major boot bug by Sayan Sen While Microsoft has its own official Media Creation Tool used for making bootable USB media, there are some popular third-party utilities as well which offer additional options like bypassing system requirements, Microsoft Account creation, and more. One of these is Ventoy, and the software has received its latest update today. In fact, the app actually got a slew of updates over the last couple of days, three version releases in total, to be specific. The first release, version 1.1.13, was pulled as there was some unspecified error in the update, and as such, the corrected version 1.1.14 was pushed out. Following that on very short notice, 1.1.15 was published as well. For those unfamiliar, Ventoy is an open-source utility that lets users create a bootable USB drive once and then simply copy ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD, or EFI files onto it without repeatedly formatting the drive. It supports both legacy BIOS and UEFI boot modes, Secure Boot, and a wide range of operating systems, making it one of the most versatile tools in the category. The biggest change in version 1.1.14 is an updated Secure Boot shim file aimed at resolving the UEFI CA 2023 issue, which is basically a compatibility problem that has affected Secure Boot environments on some systems. If you recall, we reported about severe boot issues on HP devices following the release of updated Secure Boot 2023 keys. For anyone who may not be aware, back in early 2024, Microsoft announced that it was updating Secure Boot keys as they were going to become 15 years old in 2026, which is also when they are set to expire. As such, the new 2023 certificates have been rolling out with the newest Windows 11 updates. Updated boot manager and Secure Boot certificates are crucial for protection against malware like bootkits. These are mandatory updates. Alongside that, the VentoyPlugson graphical plugin configurator was updated in sync with the release. The update also introduces a new VTOY_SECURE_BOOT_POLICY option within the Global Control plugin, giving users more flexibility in managing Secure Boot behavior. Ventoy has also received a fix for a startup issue when Secure Boot was disabled. Microsoft does officially allow users to boot systems without Secure Boot as long as the PC is Secure Boot capable. The full changelog is given below: Update secure boot shim file to solve the UEFI CA 2023 issue. The new release use a new CA, so you need to enroll the new key for the first boot time. VentoyPlugson update synchronously. Global control plugin add a VTOY_SECURE_BOOT_POLICY option. Fix the boot issue when Secure Boot is disabled in the UEFI firmware. You can download the latest version of the app here on Ventoy's official GitHub repo or from Neowin software stories.
    • Windows 11 is fine, no issues on any of the machines I've run it on since release. The stricter security requirements are a good thing, sometimes the baseline needs to change and people will winge, but it is what it is. Happened with the move from 9x to NT - broke compatability Happened with XP SP2 when security started to become a serious consideration Certainly happend with Vista that brought in UAC, the concept of not running as admin (something that has been the norm in Linux/Unix from pretty much the start) and a completely new driver stack. Windows 11 will probably get looked back at as the point where even consumer and SMB IT was dragged kicking and screaming into a somewhat secure by default configuration.
    • Bluestacks has been emulating Android on Windows for fifteen years. It's janky and riddled with ads though, so WSA looked like it was going to be a huge improvement over the emulator experience. Too bad Microsoft dropped the ball on that.
    • Classic. China would be nothing without Western, Japanese, and South Korean technology.
