AMD Not Competing with Intel Anymore, Goes Mobile

In a move than could very well be interpreted as exchanging one problem for another, Advanced Micro Devices has decided to stop focusing so much on the PC business and get its act closer together on the mobile front.

The Bulldozer disaster, as it is known in some circles, must have persuaded AMD's leadership that the PC side of their business wasn't flying very well and far anymore.

Though everyone was expecting much from 8-core processors, the performance was, in the end, well lower than some of AMD's own previous-generation chips.

Whether because of this or something else, it was reported that Advanced Micro Devices has chosen to distance itself from its competition with Intel.

Bad for us though, without AMD there is no competition in the market which means Intel doesnt have to innovate or be competitive price wise.

1. Used to have a socket A cpu and was a superb piece of kit for its time, solid as a rock. Agree with the post about Intel dominating though, yhey need to have some competition for price and performance to remain competitive.

I wonder if I've just been around too long, but it feels natural to me for a platform to have only one or two companies making CPUs for it. The PC universe's weird courtship over the years with the alternatives (AMD, Cyrix, etc) never felt quite right, and certainly never felt very significant. Apple was a one-at-a-time thing, the IBM PC standard itself originated around a particular chip family. Consoles were, in fact, originally considered personal computers before they specialized in games, and we all know those don't have anyone making competing CPUs.

So I don't feel like this is hurling us into an Intel monopoly, but rather the natural sense of a unified hardware platform that just happens to be by Intel. No big deal.

Intel CPUs were always more expensive, regardless of the competition. The saturation of the PC market alone will keep prices from doing something ridiculous (like doubling); they need to make them attractive to consumers. We're in an upgrade culture now, not adoption, and high costs will keep people on old hardware longer, forcing Intel to stay reasonable (if not competitive) if they want to please their shareholders.

Actually I think you're wrong. I bet that Intel will keep, or even lower its prices in a small amount, just to draw the AMD customers on their side. After that, yeah, they might raise the prices, but if they're smart, they won't. Alternatives will show up, sooner or later, and they can't afford to **** off people by doing this because of their monopolistic position. At least, this is my opinion.

experience working in... so they're switching to a market to compete
