Sweet! I can only see the pre-purchase, how do I play beta?

You need to pre-purchase it in order to get early access to the beta. Once you do that, the beta should show up in your library.

Me and a friend are going to be hosting 12 player servers for our friends and whatnot. Feel free to join our beta servers.

We will have a classic server and a gungame server. I'm still setting the gungame (Arms race) server up. I'll post it once I get finished.

So does anyone know why Steam would be telling me I already own the game when I am pretty damn sure I do not?

I have been in the Beta for a decent while now, but it is not telling me the beta is the duplicate copy, but the game itself.

But if you look in my Library, it only says the Beta?

So is this a mistake on Steams behalf? Or did I somehow purchase the game, not remember it, and it also is not showing up in my library?

I am leaning towards it is a mistake and I do not own it, but I definitely do not want to purchase it if I do not need to.

Been playing the beta for a week now...as much as I want to like it I just don't think it lives up to its predecessors in the CS series. Gameplay is just not as fluid as one would expect it to be. The hitbox and aiming system are abysmal imho. With some time I think the developers could make it into a great game but just isn't there yet.

Did you buy that special last weekend? Looks like you did. It came with all counter-strike games, and you got CS:GO when it releases, all for 18$!

Sweet deal, eh?

That's bug! From Valve they said buy it as gift and then when 21. came just activate it!

seems to be a mistake of some sort i get it as well when i know for a fact i haven't bought it , i just have the beta

Definitely did not buy that bundle last week. Always been a big fan of CS, so have owned all the games in the series going back to the beginning, hence why they are in my library.

Is a good deal though for anyone who does not have them.

The only other thing I was thinking is perhaps the PS3 version also includes the PC version, as i have already preordered that, but I see nothing on the PS3 saying that is the case at all.

So yeah, thinking it is obviously a bug. Thanks WinA and KnightWolf for responding.

Ah, my mistake.

I had an old boxed copy but that thing was long gone. I have actually transferred my CS:S files from hard drive to drive over the years, so I just decided to finally delete it and re-buy it so I could have it on steam, plus that was just a great deal.

Does anyone have any experience in gameservers.com? I'm having a ton of trouble trying to setup a gungame/arm race server for CS:GO. I'm hoping this isn't going to be an issue Tuesday on release. For some reason my server only wants to start on de_dust, causing issue with connecting when it is supposed to load ar_xxx maps. Have had a ticket with gameservers open for about 7 hours now and still no luck. :(

No problem at all. yeah I somehow had boxed copies of the original game and condition zero, the latter of which I think I picked up in a bargain bin at Target years ago for like $4, was something crazy.

And when I ran a CS Source server way back when, iirc it was art of war central, so no experience with gameservers, but I can share never had any issues, and the one time I did it was sorted within the hour. If you share the cfg file for the server it may jog my memory and perhaps I can see why it is not starting on the right map. You do have those map packs loaded onto the server right?

Yeah, two are default maps, and one is a custom map, all loaded onto the server. GameServers finally got back to me and asked what map I would like as default. I am wondering if this is the place I should be hosting, if they are having issues with people setting their default map...

Here is my setup:

A good friend of mine, whom I met on CS 1.6, asked me to buy it with him. I started to remember all the fun times I had playing CS over the years so I decided to buy it. I haven't played the beta in a long while but when I did, I thought it was better than CS:S but not quite like CS 1.6.

Yeah, two are default maps, and one is a custom map, all loaded onto the server. GameServers finally got back to me and asked what map I would like as default. I am wondering if this is the place I should be hosting, if they are having issues with people setting their default map...

Here is my setup:

(None of this code is working or in effect, at all. :()

Can you ask them just to put in the default untouched cfg file on the server and start over?

One thing I am noticing is Lines 62 (that is when I copy and paste it into a text editor starting with the first line of

) 93,94,95,96 and 97, which all seem to be names of maps, all have the empty quotation marks, maybe try getting rid of them, as they seem to be serving no purpose and may be messing everything up.

Really has been awhile since I have messed with a server cfg file, and this is indeed different then the one I used to mess with, but I would try that and see if it helps.

Again though, could never hurt to have them put the default file back, make a backup of that, and then try adding one map at a time to the rotation.

Oh, CS:GO doesn't really use the server.cfg file anymore. It goes through Gamemodes_server.txt. I should have mentioned that. I've reset the server 3 times already. I'm nearly 100% positive now it isn't on my end.

Using their forums, some other users have been complaining about this, and how gameservers.com won't let them alter back-end files like certain instances of the command line. (And what I need to make it a gungame server.)

Come Tuesday I think I am going to take my business elsewhere, because taking 12 hours to get one response, and now around 8 hours still awaiting the next, and my server still isn't functional.

EDIT: Finally was able to speak to someone, and finally got everything worked out.

The mapgroup, game style, and default level had to all be done on their end. They didn't mention if this would be an option upon release, but if it isn't, well that is disappointing. Just happy that the server is finally up and running.

Is GO welcoming for new players? I never played CS:S or even 1.6, for whatever reason, but if there is going to be interest from the neowin community I'd like to give it a go.

Well, it's easier than it used to be I'd say. Not very complex of a game, but more of a quick pick up and go.

    • That lens of history will burn if you hold it at the right angle... Warn users too late: Shame, Microsoft! That extremely minor update to an obscure Control Panel widget required 2 years of warning. Warn users too early: Shame, Microsoft! We've got better things to do. Pipeline and process be damned, we'll just always be disappointed, eh?
    • Microsoft Paint used to be my favorite Windows app as a kid, and it's still pretty good by Usama Jawad I have been using Windows since the early 2000s, when I was around 10 years old or so. I vaguely remember playing around with Windows 98 and Windows 2000, but that may have been on school PCs which had old operating systems installed. My main OS on the home PC, and the one I recall spending most time with, was Windows XP. At that time, I used the home PC to create Word and PowerPoint documents for school, but a lot of the time, I simply used it to play games. My dad would bring game discs which we would try and install on the PC, sometimes unsuccessfully, and sometimes, we would rely on flash games in the browser, like Bubble Trouble on Miniclip. However, the problem with the latter approach was the internet speed. On a good day, our dial-up internet would offer us speeds of 56 kbps, but on most days, it was closer to 33 kbps. This did not facilitate online gaming as I would often have to wait minutes for a game to load or "draw" on the screen, and trying to download pirated games wasn't simple either. I remember getting tired of waiting for online games to load and just downloading simulator games from the Big Fish Games website instead, only to be disappointed after finding out that I was just being given access to trial versions of the title, and I needed to fork out money to pay for the full version. All of this is to say that it wasn't very easy to find entertainment options on the home PC when I was a kid, due to a number of reasons, mostly outside of my control. This situation pushed me towards a rather unconventional ally: Microsoft Paint. Whenever the internet wasn't working as good as I expected, I would simply spin up Paint and draw complete rubbish on the canvas. Of course, that wasn't always the intention, but it usually happened when I messed up drawing a straight line or something, and then I would give up on that particular piece and simply draw a random collection of objects. Microsoft Paint was extremely accessible and easy to use. Even if you weren't an artist, you could quickly understand the tools at your disposal and how to leverage them on a canvas. The absolute breadth on offer ensured that each painting was truly unique, as you could utilize various combinations of tools like the pencil, paint, spray paint, and more to truly personalize your creation. Since I wasn't particularly good at drawing both on digital screen or a physical screen, I remember that my main style of art would be to insert a bunch of randomly intersecting lines and then fill them with random colors through the paint can. I have trying to replicate that art style in the latest version of Paint below, and as you can see, it's truly Pablo Picasso-esque. The human imagination truly knows no bounds Microsoft Paint kept me occupied for hours and was my best friend when video games on the home PC were inaccessible for one reason or the other. There was no academic or professional reason for which I would need to use Paint, but I still loved using it in my personal time, even if what I created wasn't worth being shown to anyone. It was simply fun. Fast-forward to today, and the situation is mostly the same. Now that I am almost 29 years old, and I still have no reason to use Microsoft Paint in a professional capacity. In fact, I don't even use it in a personal capacity, except to dabble with it from time to time, just to see if core functionalities are still intact. And I'm happy to say that I think Microsoft Paint still offers the same accessibility and inviting experience that it did to me a couple of decades ago, even though its UX has been refreshed and it's been integrated with Copilot features. Interestingly, things could have been a lot different, had Microsoft had its way. Microsoft Paint was marked for deprecation with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update in 2017, and even began displaying a product retirement alert, urging customers to shift to Paint 3D instead. Fortunately, after consumer backlash, Microsoft reversed course on this decision, and Paint continues to be a native app inside Windows installations that can also be updated quite frequently through the Microsoft Store. Instead, Paint 3D ended up on the chopping block, which is for the better, I think. I have intermittently played around with Microsoft's refreshed Paint experience in the past few years, and I do think it has received worthwhile upgrades. the UI and the UX has been modernized while retaining core functionality, and the app is still fairly easy to use. It doesn't meet any of my use-cases, but I've never really had any use-cases ever, as described previously. Of course, the elephant in the room is the Copilot integration. Personally, I believe that this is one place where Copilot does make sense, environmental concerns aside. I know that a lot of creatives use AI to generate images, and while some may be using professional alternatives, Paint still offers a decent casual experience, with the power of Copilot. Of course, you do need to have a valid Microsoft 365 Copilot license and available credits to use it, but even if you don't, you still get the big Copilot button in the toolbar, unfortunately. All in all, I am glad that Microsoft Paint continues to be a native feature in Windows 11, and a piece of software that has evolved to meet modern needs without cutting off its own roots. It's just an iconic piece of Windows history that was an essential part of my childhood, and while I don't use it anymore, I'm just glad it is still there.
