Filesonic sharing shutdown

Recommended Posts

From my understanding, it doesn't seem to be a gov't shutdown of the sites, rather the site limiting the sharing of files for the moment. Seems more like a precautionary measure to avoid permanent loss of data if something similar to what happened to Megaupload were to happen again. Until they move their servers, domains, etc to fully international and out of US jurisdiction, it will be "down" for a while. In the mean time, just switch to alternatives for the time being.

Funny thing about this is - no matter how many go down, a handful will go up to replace them. So, it is a matter of time before the 'unknowns' become the popular sites.

It's either that - or the pirates will come back to a differnet means of file transfer via obscure methods. I remember back in the day - BBS's used to have loads of illegal warez. You don't have those much anymore, but I can almost see sort of a revival of those through telnet if the regular sites keep coming down.

Like others have said - for every site just about - there is a 'legit' purpose to them. Sadly, for said sites, the achiles heel is the pirated software and illegitmate use.

Am I the only one who things that even though SOPA/PIPA didnt pass through the required personel already got what they wanted after they shut downed megaupload?

After the closing of megaupload most of the file sharing and video streaming sites used for piracy is either closed or have deleted those files.

I have 300GB on a paid mediafire pro account for backup / storage purposes - hope they dont do some knee jerk reaction which affects their legit customers.

filesonic didnt shut down completely. you can access your legit files that you upload. They disabled OTHER people downloading your stuff. If you used filesonic to store backups or anything like that theres no reason why you cant still access them.

So if mediafire follow suit you can still access your backup and storage files as long as they are your files on your account.

sucks for me, was only in 3 months in my one year subscription to filesonic....

even worse for the people that paid for the megaupload lifetime accounts lol

One exception may be Mediafire. They don't have the same restrictions as other file hosts (no countdown timer, download managers are allowed, etc). So I've seen lots of legitimate usage of Mediafire in general, particularly by independent developers uploading their software there.

Yeah I'm praying Mediafire doesn't become a go-to host for piracy so it stays up.

I wouldn't be surprised if other file-sharing sites did the same thing. It's such a shame because the people that will be hurt the most are legitimate users.

I've been saying it ever since the first time I tried Rapidshare that I can't believe anyone has allowed ANY of these sites to exist for as long as they have!

I have a couple GB's of stuff on Rapidshare. Haven't ever paid for more than a month at a time just out of fear that it would be shut down some day.

I can see filesonic losing alot of people and money because of this move and also people losing confidence in them which they will have to regain somehow if they re-enable there sharing options on files. As said though its not good to put all your money into one company monthly payments do cost more yes but least if something changes you can jump to another ship, like i said i think this was a stupid move by filesonic turning themselfs into a backup company with expensive prices.

For non-US users, this probably doesn't affect them at all. But I find it hard to believe that any current user would be a seriously upset over this because disabling the file-sharing option is nothing compared to being fully shutdown and losing all your data like what happened to Megaupload. You can just imagine the billions (trillions?) of MB of data that was lost by megaupload users, much of it that will never be retrievable for many users.

YAY! Good riddance. These sites make money because they host massive amounts of pirate files. I don't think I ever saw anyone using these sites for legitimate reasons!

news flash for ya buddy, the internet propely has more porn on it than any other type of content. but by your logic every one who surfs the net

    • Thanks Microsoft but no, I find both iterations of Outlook terrible nowadays and switched back to Thunderbird at home.
