I think part of the policy for answering comments on the B8 blog is "don't answer dumb questions".

"Will we be able to disable the start screen and all things Metro related?" is dumb. Microsoft gives high priority to backwards compatibility. The old Start Menu was there for nine years before they removed it in Win7.

And the first release that Sinofsky was in charge of nixed the classic start menu. And Microsoft is telling people there will NOT be a windows 7 style start menu in windows 8.

Most people have no idea Windows 8 even exists...

I was refering to those that keep up with the betas from Microsoft not the average joe user.

How is it a dumb question - the GUI is ugly..i have no use for the metro look and even if i had the hardware to do so i wouldn't like it any better. This would work for tablets but as a Desktop OS no way. And since you don't remember, Chris123NT is right - it didn't take Sinofsky long to start going against people and nixing items her didn't like.

Microsoft appears to be adopting Apple's philosophy of quickly abandoning old ways of doing things. Remember how the first iMac killed off the floppy disk drive? And now the most recent OS X releases don't even work on PowerPC anymore.

It seems Windows 8 is forcing people, rightly or wrongly, to adopt new behavior that moves beyond the traditional keyboard, mouse and desktop metaphor.

The problem is, that just because something looks the same doesn't make it better. I think, and truly feel, and believe that the current Windows 7 interface is perfect. I like the fact that folder up is back in W8, but I don't like Metro, or tiles, or the ribbon, so no ammount of time, and especially no forced push into it is going to ever make me like it.

I really hope there is a way to turn off that unneeded up button. IMO it's the most pointless addition in all of Windows 8, especially when it's placed RIGHT next to a breadcrumb-style bar that has the same function.

No it's not. When I installed the server developer preview i was greeted by a start screen on first boot. Which makes NO sense for a server lol.

Does if you're RDPing from a tablet :rofl:

It's a *developer* preview. It's not feature-complete. And FYI, the classic start menu is there if you disable the Start Screen. I didn't see MS saying there won't be a Start Menu in Win8 either.

I still don't understand why people want the "up" button. The breadcrumbs work better 99% of the time.

That's pretty simple in my view. Bread crumbs are fine and good, but they perform an entirely different function than the up arrow. I would want the up arrow more than the crumb.

Up button takes you to parent folder, breadcrumbs bar can take you to parent folder (and all folders in the path). I don't see any difference.

      I agree. I also think Phil stayed too long. They should definitely fire whoever thought all a console platform needed was Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout to survive. Asha and crew are still saying they need more Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. They simply don't get it.

      Mozilla highlights Firefox Nova 2026 redesign and more upcoming features with new roadmap by Sayan Sen Last month Mozilla confirmed that Firefox was set to get a major redesign this year. Dubbed "Project Nova", it can already be tested and will roll out to all users later this year.The idea is to keep the browser competitive in a rapidly evolving internet landscape. As such the revamp focuses on improving privacy, usability, performance, accessibility, and customization. Key privacy features including the built-in VPN, private browsing mode, and Enhanced Tracking Protection, will be more visible and easier to manage, while users will have the option to disable AI features entirely through a dedicated kill switch. Additionally, the redesign promises faster page loading, the return of Compact mode, expanded personalization options, and stronger accessibility support. In a new blog post today the company once again reiterated on Nova and also emphasized other new and upcoming features like the settings revamp that is intended to make it easier for users to understand browser settings. In order to make it simpler for users to keep up with such features Mozilla today is launching Firefox roadmap. Firefox 152 also introduces the aforementioned redesigned Settings experience.       Dead on arrival at that price. Like they missed the mark by multiple hundreds of dollars - this should actually undercut the Macbook Air at $899 if they want any sort of sales / further adoption of WoA
