Dropbox - Experimental Forum Build 1.3.12 - FREE SPACE!

Recommended Posts

Dropbox users you are not going to want to miss this!

This is reason alone to try out the beta version from the forums, you can get up to 5GB of space added to your account just for testing the picture/video import feature they have been working on.

Make sure you enable autoplay, I normally have this disabled - but for this I turned it back on. Plug in your SD/Camera/Etc with pictures/videos on it - pick to import to your dropbox and it will create a new folder copy your pics and then upload to your dropbox. As your uploads complete your will see the space added - see attached screen shot of my events.

Another day another build. We're trying to snipe all the most common bugs. Keep plugging in those cameras!

During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 4.5GB total. [Update: To clarify, you can get up to 5GB of free space with this feature, if you count the initial 500MB space for the first photo import].

So I plugged in my flip cam this morning and its prob still uploading - I had forgotten that I had not cleaned up the vids of the camera so its uploading like 6 gig ;)

And guys if you run into any issues - please report them so they can get them worked out. So far not seeing any issues, worked like a charm for me. But it is still uploading - have like 19 more vids its uploading. Just checked the total size of the folder and it's only 4.16GB so going to have to find a few more vids or pictures to get the full 5GB ;)

edit:

"did this with just transferring videos and didnt work."

Yeah you have to test the import feature - via the autoplay plugin that dropbox adds. I am not a fan of autoplay at all, and personally I don't have a need of this import feature.. But hey for 5GB extra I am happy to test it out for them ;)

No I don't think so my Flip cam does not have a SD card, just its built in 8GB - so I think any devices that stores pictures/video's should work. Maybe even an external usb flash drive - if it autoplays and you have dropbox look for pictures/videos I think it will work. You could check out the comments on the thread, there has been quite a bit of response to this - last I looked I think there were 45 pages of comments ;)

Its still uploading at home for me, and just got this here at work

Think I will try my blackberry here in a bit and see if that works -- maybe can get that to get me to the 4.5 gig mark of uploads so can max out ;)

So how would one import photos/videos from an iPhone? Is it even possible?

Do I have to import into iTunes first, then just copy over into Dropbox? That kind of defeats the whole autoplay thing no? But just realized why not utilize my kick ass T1 connection at work if possible, and have my iPhone and laptop on me.

Do you get to keep the space for good? So if i upload alot of pictures and videos, and then delete them, i'll still have the space to use for something useful?

Yes. Dropbox does these kind of events every now and then, and offer free space to go with it. Once you earn it, you have it for life. Just don't delete your account as you start back from 2GB.

Sadly, my upload speed is really slow (100 kb/ps), otherwise I would do this.

But I manage fine with 2gb, I only use my Dropbox for school stuff really, so it's no biggie. It's very nice of Dropbox to award their users, who beta test, this way.

"Dropbox does these kind of events every now and then"

Yup a while back they had a scavenger hunt (dropquest) where you could earn up to 1GB free space - it was fun as hell! All kinds of crazy puzzles to solve. And as you progressed through the puzzles you got more space up to a total of 1GB.

Prizes:

  • Completion: 1 GB for life

Dropquest will also be timed, and the fastest finishers will be rewarded with even more fantastic prizes.

  • Platinum: (1) Dropbox hoodie (Psychobox), LIMITED EDITION Dropbox Hack Week t-shirt (actual design), Dropbox drawing signed by the Dropbox team, 50 GB for life!
  • Gold: (10) Dropbox hoodie (Psychobox), Dropbox print signed by the Dropbox team, 10 GB for life!
  • Silver: (20) Dropbox t-shirt (Psychobox), 5 GB for life!
  • Bronze: (50) 2 GB for life!
...and a few secret prizes too!

I am hoping they run one for 2012 ;)

And for those lazies out there, people even posted the solutions -- so you couldn't figure something out you could kind of "cheat" and still get the space.

Yeah I don't plan on leaving 4.5GB of vids up there - but sure willing to upload them once to get the space ;)

Wow, nice post. I was just looking at my dropbox and wishing it had the space my box.net account has (so many things link to dropbox, far fewer to box). Gonna have to try this out!

Edit: Poop... "The photo import feature is not available on Mac 10.4 and Linux." I'm gonna have to set up a Windows machine to do it, haha.

Also if your looking for more free space, check out https://www.dropbox.com/free

Connect with twitter/facebook and get space, send feedback -- you can get like 768MB there.

And nevermind to my above question about iPhone, I should have checked it out first before I asked. :pinch:

Actually a pretty damn cool feature. Digging in for sure. Now to hook up every single camera in my household tonight.

Got Windows installed on a spare server (haha) just to upload. Seems to work great. I'll definitely set this up at home, especially since the main reason I was wanting more space on Dropbox was to do some photo backups from my phone. I'll probably use Syncly though, not this.

Do you get to keep the space for good? So if i upload alot of pictures and videos, and then delete them, i'll still have the space to use for something useful?

yes you do.

Free 25Gb total :D thx

LIES. you can only get a max of 4.5 gbs extra space. with this offer.

... this offer does work if you have multipul accounts though :shiftyninja:

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
