+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted February 9, 2012 Subscriber² Share Posted February 9, 2012 Dogs and Apes are the only animals that understand "pointing". Dogs read human faces for emotions, scanning them the same way we scan each others face to determine the emotion. Interesting if true. Although I've noticed my cats always watch my finger if I point, but my dog looks at what I'm pointing at if I stress it. :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1056368-tell-me-something-i-dont-know/page/8/#findComment-594643846 Share on other sites

Original Poster
List of common misconceptions I remember: The iPhone 4/4S is good. - False. It just isn't. Bats are blind. - False Chameleons change colour to match their surroundings. - False Humans evolved from monkeys - False. We evolved from a common ancestor. Albert Einstein did not fail mathematics in school, as is commonly believed. Upon being shown a column claiming this fact, Einstein said "I never failed in mathematics... Before I was fifteen I had mastered differential and integral calculus. Sushi does not mean "raw fish", and not all sushi includes raw fish. The name sushi means "sour rice". Swallowed chewing gum does not take seven years to digest. In fact, chewing gum is mostly indigestible, but passes through the digestive system at the same rate as other matter. Bananas do not grow on trees; the "banana tree" is in fact an herbaceous flowering plant (a herb). You can see the Great Wall of China from in space - False. None of the Apollo astronauts reported seeing any specific human-made object from the Moon, and even Earth-orbiting astronauts can barely see it. City lights, however, are easily visible on the night side of Earth from orbit. Black holes contrary to their common image, do not necessarily suck up all the matter in the vicinity. The word theory in the theory of evolution does not imply mainstream scientific doubt regarding its validity; the concepts of theory and hypothesis have specific meanings in a scientific context. While theory in colloquial usage may denote a hunch or conjecture, a scientific theory s a set of principles that explains observable phenomena in natural terms. "Scientific fact and theory are not categorically separable" and evolution is a theory in the same sense as germ theory or the theory of gravitation. Evolution does not attempt to explain the origin of life. few of your statements to go these "facts" are wrong or at least a lil off the ball chemelons for ones may not change to match their background exactly but it is a defence used to blend in slightly to their surroundings. also while I am not sure on the wall of china thing, it does say from space not from the moon.. space is simply out side out atmosphere, while the moon is around 2 weeks away by shuttle? and although the fact about the herbs tree is true :p they are still produced on the tree and one would still have to climb the beast to get it down there for saying they grow on trees is not incorrect. Iphone 4/4s is not a bad phone... it is a terrible phone lol everything else though is pretty much on the money and a side note can we believe he didnt fail maths? its still suspected he stole most if not all of his theories... I remember hearing that this is simply outright false, not even a little bit true. Chameleons change their patterns almost exclusively for communication purposes, and the whole camouflage thing is just some made up story that's managed to be passed down long enough to become "fact". Guest seanseany
It took 7,000,000 man hours to construct the Empire State building. It took a year and 45 days(including weekends and other holidays) to construct the Empire State building. Its cost including land was $40,948,900. More than 10 million bricks were used to construct the Empire State building. The building itself cost $24,718,000 to build (nearly half the expected cost because of the Great Depression). Its foundation is 55 feet (16.7 meters) below ground. The Empire State building weighs 365,000 tons. The Empire State building has 6500 windows. It has 1860 steps. You can lose ten pounds of weight if u climb all those steps without a pause. Though you dont have to do this exercide because there are 73 elevators in the building and six of them are freight ones. Speaking of which, here's a fact for you... The only reason so many companies use corn syrup in their products instead of sugar is that it's cheaper. Another fact: The only reason corn syrup is cheaper then sugar is that the US government throws mounds of cash at the corn industry via subsidies.... thanks Government. :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1056368-tell-me-something-i-dont-know/page/8/#findComment-594644484 Share on other sites

monkey13
yes they mostly do for comunication but is also used for basic camo i have worked with them and have seen them match their backgrounds unless what i noticed was pure coincidence and the lizard was telling me to naff off Does depend on the variety. I think almost all of them do do it as camouflage at least a little bit but not necessarily directly. For example. They are chatting away changing colours and then they see a predator approaching (could be they think you are one). Since the changing is essentially their talking they shut up. If you are going to shut up and pick a colour might as well make it the same as your background to make them harder to spot. Not exactly just for camouflage but they do use it like that (if that makes sense). Paul Ferson Veteran Posted February 10, 2012 Veteran Share Posted February 10, 2012 The king of hearts is the only king without a moustache. But don't women love moustaches?! :o I figured I'd attempt to list a few interesting facts about Ireland but they're from my own memory so may be a little incorrect or off in some respects. I'm not actually that interested in the country but it has elements which intrigue me. Ireland's only registered world heritage site is the Giant's Causeway, which is the only basalt formation of its kind in the world. There are still bullet holes in Dublin's General Post Office from the 1916 Easter Rising. County Galway in the Republic of Ireland is the home of the location with the longest name in the country: Muckanaghederdauhaulia. The band responsible for the song "Fairytale of New York", The Pogues, was originally going to be called Pogue Mahone, which was an Anglicized version of the Irish words 'p?g mo th?in', which mean 'Kiss my ***'. It really is pronounced Pogue Mahone, though! Some towns in Northern Ireland have the letters 'VC' after their name, signifying the Victoria Cross due to World War I veterans who received the cross for conduct in battle. Typically these are never mentioned, but are still present. Northern Ireland was one of the locations most badly effected by The Battle of the Somme in World War I, and the 36th Ulster Division are one of the few divisions of the British Army who managed to achieve their objectives during the battle. Even around my area of Northern Ireland there are a lot of casualties, and there's a fair chance at least one of them is related to me. Typically small areas of the community were wiped out more than entire towns, cities, and such. Belfast's ice hockey team, the Belfast Giants, are named after the legend of Finn McCool, who was supposedly a giant responsible for the formation of the Giant's Causeway. I wish I was joking here. This sounds really stupid doesn't it? SirEvan
^^ That was incredibally awesome not really dude. 11x13x7 = 1001. doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how the math works. Take 1,001. Separate it at the comma. you get (00)1 001. (I added the 0's to make it look nicer). Since the original statement said take any 3 numbers and repeat, do so. say 456,456. again separate the numbers into two groups. 456, 456. divide 456/1 for each, you get "456". drop one set of numbers...you're left with your original 3 numbers, 456. It's about as awesome as saying "take any number, divide by itself, and you get 1" but whatever. amazing.. wooo. It just looks cool because they say take 7/11/13 in any order, so you think it's stupendously awesome, but it's not.
